Smart Phone recommandations

I will shortly be in the market for a new smart phone. The requirements are as follows:- 1) Make and recieve calls 2) Available in the UK 3) Must support RDP so I can attach to remotely to Microsoft Windows servers etc. I've been looking at the HTC HD2 as these have large screens, and notice that HTC have just released the Desire HD. Any thoughts on these? Any other recommandations would be appreicated.

Well I have a Desire, and from what I gather the HD version is the same as the Desire but with some extra features. The phone itself is good, as it's android based you have the ability to change anything you want. Plus it has Widgets, which are really nifty. I have a gmail account already, so can synch my email, calendar and task list - all very easy. I also have another email account that I have synced and works quite happily. I don't really use it that much for social networking, so can't comment on that side of things greatly. I'm assuming that you've used smart phones before so are aware that the battery life isn't great. But, I will say that if you use this phone 'a lot' then you should expect to charge it every day. There are some good forums that show you how to turn the various things off you don't need etc, try: Android Forums[^] for a kick off. I haven't used any RDP apps so haven't got any helpful advice on that regard, but am sure there will be something on the market. Overall though, as you're tech savvy, the main beauty of the phone is that it can do pretty much whatever you want - which for me is the main selling point. :)

Maybe you can hold off your purchase for 3 more weeks? That's when the new Windows Phone 7 devices are rumoured to hit the stores. I don't know if they will have RDP since day 1, but having the Office suite pre-installed makes them fulfill the minimum requirements for a business user. I'm following Engadget.com's feed just for news, previews and leaks on WP7. So far I'm super impressed of how responsive the phone is to user input. It's also said that the OS is very battery-life friendly.

Touch screen... I don't like them... well they are great and easy to use and a lot of nice things... But then it happens that when you use your phone and you approximate it to your ear you start new apps and make sudokus and play solitaire and connect to the internet and... using your ear... Or if it gets locked then it happens that you need to insert new numbers to jump from one extension to another one and then it happens that you can't... My last phone: HTC touch dual... As far as I've seen the iPhone and blackberry displays are really nicer than the one in my phone... anyway it is an old phone nowadays... Depending on the use you make of your phone having a full keyboard is nice, and not having to open 20 lids to access it is also nice... And of course you'll have your choice almost done but who knows... this could have helped you... PS1: blackberry seems to be nice only with a data plan. PS2: android seems to be a really open platform with tons of apps out there. Just my two cents...

Bloody iPhone gave up the ghost yesterday and it's only 4 months old! Battery drains in less than a day and service keeps dropping out or is simply not there. If I could get out of the contract I would: O2 have sent it to be repaired (7-10 days) but I suppose they'll just give me a new one. :mad:

Wait until the W7 launch - because even if you don't want a W7 phone it is bound to push down the prices of the others.

I have been using HTC phones based on Windows Mobile for several years and generally had good experiences. I am about to get myself a new phone and have been looking into the differences between the imminent Windows Mobile 7 (a complete overhaul of WM so effectively a 1.0 release) and Android 2.2 (a stable and open OS which now boasts widespread adoption), my conclusion is that Android is slightly ahead of the game at this moment in time so I will go for an Android phone next and keep an eye on how further iterations of Windows Mobile look. I intend on getting the HTC Desire HD which has the 4.3 screen and pretty much the best hardware specs around. I wouldn't bother with the HTC HD2 now, it is a great phone but runs Windows Mobile 6.5 which is about to be superseded. Both Android and WM will handle RDP fine with 3rd party tools so that should not sway the decision. I would go with either the HTC Desire HD with Android or wait for WM7 to be released next month which will run on something like the rumoured HTC HD7 which seems to have a similar spec.

Thanks for your feedback. I'd pretty much dismissed the Blackberry, purely due the the screen size. Quite frankly I'm happy to use a standard mobile phone and have a separate PocketPC (which is what I have now). The only valid reason from ditching my PDA and phone is that I need to remotely support servers, therefore RDP is a requirement. A big screen means I'd be able to see more at any one time.

One of my directors swopped his Blackberry for an iPhone. The iPhone had crappy reception, no support for push mail and there was other issues. It lasted month then he went back to his Blackberry. He was originally suckered in by the "Bells and Whistles" of the iPhone.
