The coating on my lenses have worn off in some areas and it is slowly becoming worse and worse. It has come to a point where it is intolerable and everytime they get wet they smell like burnt chemicals. If I could just remove this coating off of my glasses I would be able to see better. I need to be able to do it with in house ingredients, I can't go out and buy anything. I need a serious answer please, I am blind without my glasses.

I wish I could. I'm dirt poor and I need real powerful lenses. I just need to remove the coating from my current glasses.

If you wear prescription glasses I wouldn't mess around with modifying them. Your eyes are precious and you should see an eye doctor if your glasses are worn or if they are not helping you any more.

Why do your glasses get wet and why would they smell like chemicals when they do? And how is that related to your problem of not being able to see clearly through them?

They get wet if I run water over them or if they become fogged up by a sudden temperature change. They smell like chemicals because of the special coating on the lenses is reacting with something. It is related to my problem of not being able to see clearly through them because the coating is dissolving in some areas so it is like looking through really dirty glasses all the time.

They have an anti-glare/anti-reflective coating and I'm pretty sure they also have an anti-scratch coating on them. They are 300 dollar lenses, placed in 200 dollar titanium frames. I've had them for nearly 6 years now I wear them everyday. The coatings or possibly even the lenses are reacting to something when they get wet.

Have you tried to clean them with something you shouldn't have? e.g. a caustic solution, bleach etc. Water shouldn't react with the coating on glasses.

It is possible that they have come into contact with certain acids over a year ago but that doesn't explain why they are still reacting with moister.

DON'T. Go get new glasses; I'm certain you can "cheap" glasses lenses for your budget, they might not be extra-thin Nikon or varilux lenses, but they will do the job. Trust me I know it IS expensive.

I'm thinking about getting contacts instead. Fifteen bucks a month or so isn't that bad and I can skip out on some days if I need to.

Did you drop them into some sort of solution you were concocting? If you are taking that solution now, it's possible the smell is entirely in your head. Seriously, though, that is weird. Perhaps leave them in a large bowl of water for a day to see if the reaction continues and all the chemical is dissolved away?

The coating on my lenses have worn off in some areas and it is slowly becoming worse and worse. It has come to a point where it is intolerable and everytime they get wet they smell like burnt chemicals. If I could just remove this coating off of my glasses I would be able to see better. I need to be able to do it with in house ingredients, I can't go out and buy anything. I need a serious answer please, I am blind without my glasses.
