Really? Surely Greatest African Country in Africa? Also, define Great. If you mean size, it is not the biggest, if you mean wealth, it is not the richest if you mean culturally it is not even close. All you have is oil and ethnic troubles between christians and muslims, and as for the most populous, that just goes to show the inability to have family planning, and with large families comes poverty and ill-education. So, Carry on, and happy birthday.

How odd then that the Romans called it Magnus Britannia. (Admittedly it was around 80 AD that this started, previously it was just Britannia.) At this time there was no France, Germany, Belgium or Netherlands, so it seems quite fortunate that we were called into existance by the Romans and the name stuck.

I dunno who this Magnus Britannia chappie is. Are you getting confused with the Magna Britannia (which was a book/scroll/suchlike)?

Sometimes you can be a dickhead, DD. I gave you a 1. You simply can't resist pissing on other people's parades, can you?

But inspite of all these social vices/menaces such as poverty, lack of employment, corruption, nepotism, sentiments, looting, bad governance, rigging of elections, political killings and instability rocking my dear nation at the moment, i see a better Nigeria and the true giant of the black race coming in the next few decades that will be a marvel to the world. So please DD let me enjoy this moment :)

Exactly. Different people have different perception and interpretation of "great". EDIT: I didn't down vote you.

Same question. Why is Britain "Great"? Don't be picky and let people feel their country is a great one. It doesn't hurt any one.

Being British, it doesn't do to blow one's own trumpet: Great [as in Large] Britain as opposed to [Little] Britain[ny] in France. The name wasn't even coined by the British, and the names Britain and Brittany have changed separately in the centuries since it first came into use.

I'm delighted to see that you are so enthusiastic about your country. It's always good to see somebody who's patriotic and happy to blow their nations trumpet. I know that others have pointed out that Nigeria has problems - so what, all countries do. You be proud of your heritage, and stand up and be counted when it comes to making your country great - when, at the end, they ask you how you stood for your country; say that you were always there for your people, and you have done your best to make things better for everybody. Good for you:thumbsup:

I'm from Africa and I strongly disagree, claiming to be the greatest country on this continent, is like claiming to be first from behind. (IMHO) But nevertheless, Happy Birthday!

The only proper response from a Westerner in this thread. +5. I always thought Indians were the most discriminated against national group on CP, but I'm shocked to see the vitriol in this thread (and Joergen's) against somebody who's happy about the 50th anniversary of his country's independence. My respect for you, Sir, has gone up by several notches.

Thanks my friend - I hope that others were just having an off day, and that in future they will respond with more sensitivity.
