Excellent idea. Now buy an apartment, refuse to pay firefighting fees and set it on fire. edit: actually, I had heard of this. Also, I expect their insurance won't pay up. They never do anyway, but now they can say it was their own fault. And it pretty much was - whether the rule is stupid or not is irrelevant. They could have known this would happen.

This is what taxes are for. Why is there a fee for something that should be a no brainer?

How's that? Are you saying this is okay?

Recently I found out about a Tennessee man who's home burned down because he hadn't paid the fee for rural fire fighting in his county. Now I'd never heard of such a thing. The mayor calls it pay as you go. Has anyone heard of this before?

From the article that got linked to, it doesn't sound like pay as you go. The homeowner did offer to pay, but was still declined service. There is probably more to this story than is being mediatized. :)

This is what happens when we get socialism/fascism. Trillions upon trillions of your tax dollars go to offshore mega banks while your services are rationed or outright cut.

I knew you would chime in with that... This isn't socialism or fascism. This is capitalism taken to extremes. He didn't pay for fire protection, so they let his house burn down. If it was socialism, they would have come anyway, and just charged it to the taxpayers. If it was fascism, they would have burnt his house down themselves for failure to pay.

Here's some more information. http://www.thefoxnation.com/justice/2010/10/05/firefighters-watch-home-burns-ground[^] The video tells how the fire got started and more people's reaction and when the policy began.

Is that even relevant? I wouldn't have made a stupid system like this, but now that it's there the people can choose between paying or risking their house. And they can also complain, but that never helps, you just get buried in bureaucracy. Their neighbours knew of this, so yes they could (and should) have known. I presume they were also told about this fire fighting fee, but I'm not certain. Regardless, if I was their insurance, I wouldn't pay up.

There was a thread a while back that brought up government services and I had mentioned fire departments being paid for with taxes. For people like CSS and anyone else who thinks that government services are free, or tax breaks pay for themselves believe in magic. I really don't mind the tax rates for everyone going up a couple percentage points. It will help pay for things we need in the country and pay off the debt that Bush and Wallstreet has given us.

Have you ever tried to seriously complain about something? What was the result? Probably some bullshit response about the budget or the land use planning, right? Meanwhile they(local govt)'re eating out of their noses and paying big money for some stupid rusty piece-of-shit (literally) art for a roundabout that has to cost several millions because the artist was very artsy and "rusty poo" apparently "means" something. Voting doesn't really "work", it never has. Your properly educated choice is lost in the masses of populist-voters.

An armed revolt? In Europe? :) What might work is a massive ad campaign to educate dumb people about the fact that political parties are not just for fun, and that populism is a bad for you even if their ideas sound nice to your peanut-sized brain. The problem is, people are idiots, so they vote like idiots. Voting would definitely work if there was an IQ requirement for it. Do you know Geert Wilders? Do you know how many votes his party got?

In part that's why I asked, but mostly for ideas. People are idiots, but that's why I ask. There has been a lot of organizing as of late in Iowa that hasn't really been making the news. I had to watch a public broadcasting program to know about it. In some cases IQ should be required for having kids too.

I've often thought this, but it's no reason to give up. Which is why in a way all us citizens voted for the bailouts, the recession, the wars, CIA rendition, and everything else our government does in our name. You know the saying, you reap what you sow. That's where we're at right now harvest time. I want to change the crop.

That's called seagull management (or sometimes pigeon management)... Fly in, flap your arms and squawk a lot, crap all over everything and fly out again... by _Damian S_
