Ton is the English term. Tonne is the European sloppy term for 1000Kg. I have no Idea what a Kilogram is. If someone told me to buy two Kilos of potatoes I would return with the wrong amount of potatoes. If I was asked to buy 2lb of spuds, no problem. There is a classic example in an old case in the UK. The Metric Martyr, Steve Thorburn, was being prosecuted for selling goods in a market using imperial measures. His defence counsel had the local authority's spokesman on the stand and asked him about the way he approached his client. "But you sent two large heavy's (thugs) to intimidate my client" "No, they were sent to inform him that he had to sell using the metric measures", cometh the reply. "But they were exceptionally tall weren't they?" asked counsel. "No, I think they were about six foot or so, not exceptionally tall" Sayeth the spokesman. "Six foot?, tell me, What is that in centimeters?" enquired the barrister. "I don't know" said the man responsible for ensuring goods were sold using the metric system.

A kilogram is the mass of 1 litre of water. A litre is 10cm cubed. 10cm is 1/10th of a metre which was originally intended to be one ten-millionth of the distance from the Earth's equator to the North Pole. :-D
