Forecasters say this winter could be the coldest Europe has seen in the last 1,000 years.[^] Now OK, I hear the weather isnt climate argument coming. But recall, some years back the sea froze in the English Channel. A year later Gatwick ran out of deicer. Then London had the first October snow for 70 years, and a year later a new cold record was set in Scotland, and the UK was entirely blanketed by snow (OK, I am English, I tend to follow the UK news a bit). However the current winter in the southern hemisphere has seen record cold in Australia and South America. So when does weather become climate?

We need to take action now, cut carbon emissions by 80%, enact carbon taxes now. So when it is cold out, you will not be able to afford to heat your home and you will die, for the earth ofcourse.

"sigh" It has been explained to you time after time that the effects of global warming are predicted to be adverse and often extreme changes in weather. These can range from increased amount and strength of hurricanes off the americas. Increased cold or heat extremes in any part of the world. Increased flooding in any part of the world. It does not and no one has suggested that it does mean just that the weather will get warmer in isolation from all the other effects.

I tried... It doesn't work... Getting fat_boy to understand global warming / climate change is like getting CSS to understand libertarianism. It just isn't in the cards.

It's not a question of understanding. He is obsessed with the subject to a point that defies logic. Trying to address it with reason is a waste of effort - that's not the currency he's dealing in.

You're repeating yourself every time you start another thread about some weather record.

This is why it's not worth discussing with him about. He's boring the hell out of subject.

I have a business idea for you "Fly Clean, Fly Green" - Departure lounge enemas. Research has shown that on average an enema will remove 50 - 100 grams of faecal matter. If every passenger on a 747 was to remove this much body weight the resulting fuel savings would save 5 trees per 1000kms travelled. I reckon there's money in it.

Well, although this is often stated the only real prediction is that some areas might experience more rainfall and others less, and these only come from computer models. Studies of extreme weather events in the past have found no correlation between them and temperatures, this was one of the errors discoverd in the AR4. There are also experts, such as Lindzen, who suggest that the reduction in temperature gradient betwen the poles and tropics will lead to less extreme weather so this area is vey much undecided. But ultimately global warming must lead to warmer weather over long periods of time (climate), so your statement is illogical. If not then there isnt warming and the system retuns to stasis, which would indicate there are strong negative feedbacks at play.

I understand it perfectly well Ian, I just happen to disagree with the predicted outcome like many scientists, in increasing numbers.
