Financial Director has gone home ill, Managing Director is out of the office and in walks the Chairman. With no-one else to talk to he picks on me. So there I am in his office discussing Cash-Flows and Payments, Sub-Contractors and Suppliers, Professional Fees and why they are so high... I am trying to answer him without giving him any information, and am doing quite well, then there comes the odd question or two where I cannot dodge the bullet. I have to say certain things that he is best off not knowing, for it will cause the other Directors to be very frustrated and annoyed. When my boss (the financial director) returns tomorrow I hope he understands the predicament I was in and I shall tell him in advance what was said, what reports I had to produce and where I laid the blame for various things, (at the door of the managing director!). I don't mind doing the dirty work, provided it is being done to people further down the food chain than myself, but when you are asked to provide ammunition against those higher up it can be somewhat worrying! Ho Hum, if he didn't like the answers, he shouldn't have asked the questions. It was when the commercial manager walked in and was asked to join us and then grilled over cost over-runs on one of the sites that I thought there would be trouble. Fortunately the CM was able to explain the reasons for the over-runs were because we were progressing very quickly, but I was glad to be excused when the time came. Back to my office and emails aplenty to the other directors and all the managers telling them that the chairman was having a coniption fit about spending money. I think they will be glad of the heads up.

So you told the bosses' boss the truth? Sure, it may be the case that the FD would have preferred to be there him/herself, to "manage the message" as it were, but I don't see how telling the truth should get you into trouble. Of course, in this case, "should" is not the same as "could". I thought you (as the accountant) just counted the beans. I assumed other people actually went and spent them. A cost overrun on a building site isn't your fault, surely?

He took it all too far, but boy could he play guitar!

No, and I successfully manoeuvred myself from any responsibility. I never do anything that would get me into trouble. (I make sure there are emails or memos asking me to do things, that way I pass the buck). I won't be in trouble for telling the truth, I will be in trouble simply for telling him anything at all. The standing orders amongst us all are that we tell the chainman as little as possible.

Lets cut the chase and get to the point. Are we getting a CCC (on time) tomorrow or not?

Your first mistake: becoming an accountant. Your second mistake: not reporting sketchiness as soon as it happened. Your third mistake: asking for a raise. Your fourth mistake: posting this much detail on a public forum. Perhaps somebody created this situation so that you would post here and reveal sensitive company information then use that breach to fire you. Or maybe your delay in reporting these issues will get you fired. In any event, you're gonna be fired. Or, you know, that's just penny-pinching business as usual. :)

Now I have a serious problem with that, this person has the ultimate responsibility within the organisation and his minions either don't tell the truth or don't tell the complete story. And then we want to blame the board when the organisation goes tits up. I hate the way management shield their seniors from the truth about the organisation they work for. The one person you need to point out a problem to is your boss or his boss etc (this is why they keep me in a dark corner with plenty of work and NEVER invite me to non technical meetings).
