Why my internship sucks today...
-
I have an internship at a local office of UWV in the Netherlands (they pay benefit to the unemployed) About 4 months ago they asked me to make a small database so they can track how long it takes for our doctors to handle a case, because the system they used now was crap, real crap. Ignorant lil me did so, after using it for 4 months as test they liked it and told me they would keep using it. No problem there. Then they tell me they don't want to lose the 2 year of data they gather before they used my lil database. So now here I am... fighting my way through over 2000 records. There is no standard... No 2 records look alike... They just wrote stuff down they thought would be interesting... With the tools I have here (the computers here are completely restricted, can’t even install a text editor) there is now way to automate it... I’m not allowed to take it home so I can use my own tools, the information is too sensitive. I'm slowly loosing my sanity with every record I read. (and I din't have that much too begin with) only good think I got the look forward to is a new intern coming next week that I can dump this on and get back to some meaningful stuff (like lurking around the lounge every 10 min).
saru mo ki kara ochiru (even monkeys fall from trees) Usualy i'm that monkey. If you want an intelligent answer, Don't ask me. To understand Recursion, you must first understand Recursion.

You could have converted 20 records in the time it took you to complain about it. You could probably have it done by Monday if you were committed to excellance (worked over the weekend). The key is to excel. If you don't have the ambition, find another line of work. Dumping it on a subordinate (especially a NEW subordinate that is unfmaliar with the system) is never the right thing to do.

Jystad, 2001Of course I’m exaggerating with dumping it on the new intern, but he will get to do some of it. As annoying as it may be it’s a great way to learn the system The annoying part is just that in 2 years time they didn't think of some form so you would at least get some sort of standard. And yeah ill probably came in over the weekend to get some extra done. And I’m not really losing time right now because 1 of the systems I need to "decrypt" this stuff is down, some server crash at the main office.

Feel free to slave over the weekend while everybody else will get a very well deserved rest. I'll be camping, hiking and biking instead! I'm sure you can have reasonable fun in the office. Maybe you could hike around the office, climb some cubicles, maybe do an obstacle run over the office chairs or crawl under the tables, or bring a mini-clown bike and ride it around, be sure to bring a squeaky red nose button...

Let me guess, your first job many years ago has been on a slave galley, you know…the guy with the lashes and you miss this job very badly?

Please do! Meanwhile, your boss will be looking at outsourcing your job to India where people are willing to work overtime and over weekends without getting cranky about it.

No, I was committed accomplishing my tasks, and worked a lot of overtime. I still am committed to that, but being a lot more experienced, I know how to avoid the overtime. This guy is an intern, and should expect to be doing scut work like this. So much for anything even remotely recognizable as a decent work ethic from those of you down-voting my post. In this economy, I certainly wouldn't bitch too loudly when it came time to put in a little extra effort in order to get a job done.

Well, see? there you've got it all wrong. I'm a senior developer and don't have to work overtime. This guy is an intern, and should expect it.

Is that what you really meant? ;) Well, if that were the case, then it would be time to a) either get a whole lot better/make myself really irreplaceable or b) look for a career change and see how the dice rolls. Both of those options are better than working yourself to death. I mean really, if all you do is work and sleep, you might as well off yourself now and save yourself 50 years of pain, agony, and eating breadcrumbs on non-existing retirement...

I haven't downvoted you, but I think the reason some have is that I (and perhaps they) thin kyou are missing the point. I got no sense from the Original Poster that he/she had any problem with putting in the effort to get the job done. The post was just out of frustration at a) nobody thinking to put any structure on the collection of data for 2 years, and b) being prevented from using tools that would accomplish the job more efficiently. The real issue here is that an intern can spot and implement efficiencies that the well paid incumbents couldn't. -Rd

There aren't too many of us here, unlike India where everyone and their dog is writing code.

Everyone is replaceable. You think there wouldn't be any programmer in India with almost the same skill-set as you ? ...and willing to work overtime for less ?

Is it all about the illusion of enjoyment ? How much do you remember enjoying yourself ten years ago ? Did it help much ? Can you still enjoy the enjoyment you enjoyed ten years ago ? I guess not. And yes, all I do is work and sleep and am quite happy with that. It is much better than the alternative.

Noooo. People were downvoting you for ... 1. Suggesting that the original poster wasn't committed to excellence. 2. Assuming that the original poster wasn't going to work at the weekend. 3. Suggesting that the original poster lacked ambition. 4. Suggesting that venting about inefficiency is somehow an indication of laziness or poor standards. At least, If I were inclined to downvote you (which I'm not) those would have been my reasons. -Rd
