Found Samsung Kies some time back to copy my Outlook contacts to the Captivate, but now it's not connecting. And thus, the temptation to just root the damned thing, offset by the very real possibility of bricking the stupid phone. You'd think it would plug into USB and just show up as a mass storage device, but apparently not the case. And so, I hesitate. Is rooting common and safe, and I'm just being a sissy? :)

Let me know when you find out! My Samsung Epic is currently a brick,as Sprint can't figure out how to activate it, but as soon as they get that working I'm sure they'll screw up something else.

Well, I figured out how to get the mass storage part working so I'm edging slowly away from the rooting option. When you connect in mass storage mode, one might expect that you're connected and the drives will show up on your PC. Of course not. Don't be silly. This is Penguin technology, so it needs to be more complicated than that. The status bar at the top notifies you that you've connected via USB. You have to open the status bar and tap that message. Then you get a dialog box asking if you'd like to mount the drives. Select Mount, and it now shows up on the PC. Who's acid trip was that?

Nope, but i was tempted by CyanogenMod's efforts.....I am more than happy with my Nexus One the way it is, and the updates seem to arrive OTA pretty quickly after being announced. I have a spare HTC HD2, that I have been tempted to break.......either try an android install it, or mess about with the WinMob7 roms that are floating around.

Should I assume their staggering incompetency in handling dual line phone issues extends to not being able to remove both lines from your old phone, assign one to your new phone, and the second back to your old phone?

It's common, but it's only safe if you use protection.

That would be correct. It is somewhat more complicated, I guess, as the old phone (and the company line) is on the Nextel network, while the new phone is a Sprint-only device. It still seems strange, though, that this whole dual line thing took 30 seconds to set up, and two weeks to take apart...

Not on the Desire. If I plug it into a USB host (as opposed to a charging device) it asks whether I want to Sync, Mount, Charge or something else (I forget which). When you select mount the PC recognises it straight away - there's no separate mount option.

I doubt it. If it isn't intuitive then we need to fix it. - Chris Maunder

So it's clearly Samsung's acid trip and not Androids. That's good. The though of a robot on hallucinogens makes me nervous. :)
