Weekly Firearms Activity Report - Liberals and Foreigners Avert Your Eyes (part 2)

Took the FrankenRifle to the range today, and ran 120 rounds through it. It was just a shakedown run, and only one thing came loose (easily fixed). I experienced half a dozen fail-to-fire events. The firing pin struck the primer, but the round didn't fire. One of two things can cause this: 0) The trigger job hammer spring is too weak (after the trigger job) - this is an easy fix (and only cost $9 for new springs). 1) The thing that came loose is the floating hand guard. It could be tweaking the gas tube out of position just enough to keep the gas key on the bolt carrier from allowing the bolt carrier to slide all the way forward. This fix will be free because all I have to do is torque on it harder. It's clear that some forensic dis-assembly is called for. Of course, I will share my findings with you - my adoring fans. Overall, accuracy is pretty good. Shooting offhand without a sling and with only iron sights, I was putting the rounds into a 3-inch circle at 50 yards. That's significantly smaller than what we call a "minute of man". I think I would have done better if I wasn't being distracted by the FTFs. There were a LOT of people at the range today (including half a dozen VERY hot chicks that were taking turns shooting each others' pistols, rifles, and shotguns). All of the rifle spots were in use, and there were people waiting their turns. One guy asked me what manufacturer made my rifle, and I said "I did". That was enough to get the attention of a few other people (and a couple of the hot chicks), and we all stood around discussing the nuances of building your own AR-15. Fun was had by all. :)

Do you ever find on auto fire that the gas valve causes jams as it heats? SLR's and SA80 were prone to this, kept having to adjust. Mind you, a good old clean out would decordite it and all was well.

I recently had someone I knew vaguely friend me on facebook. I commented on the utter stupidity of a post he linked to ( which was a right wing commentator claiming that smoking does not cause cancer ) and in the ensuing discussion, we established that he lived in a fairy land of ignorance as to what people who don't subscribe to hardcore right wing beliefs, actually believe, and why. Something about the headers you choose for these posts, although I assume they are meant in jest, remind me of that guy. He doesn't talk to me anymore. He prefers to only talk to people who feed his ignorance and his worldview. Oh, and he thinks that Ted Nugent is a brilliant political commentator. That was the bit that ended our friendship. I think Ted is fine guitarist, and hilarious to read, but not someone I'd ever take seriously. He likes to argue with a caricature of the left, without any form of understanding, so I see how this guy likes him. I just wonder how one can caricature the right. There is at least an element, represented by this guy, that is too extreme and too insane to be able to be exaggerated in any way. Glad you had fun playing with your guns tho :-)

Yeah, but where's the fun in that? This is one of the few things that can be fixed without paying someone else too much to do it for you. I used to be able to work on my own car, but nowadays, that's pretty much impossible.

Class 3 firearms are prohibited with going through an exhaustive background check and paying a hefty tax. Besides, full auto is a waste of ammo. I've never heard of a M16 melting, and there's no valve involved in the cycling mechanism on a M16/AR15. When a round is fired, a small amount of gas is expelled through a hole in the barrel under a gas block which transfers the gas through a tube back to the upper receiver. There, a gas key is pushed by the gas, which propels the bolt carrier backwards into a buffer/spring group, and the spring compresses. As the bolt carrier moves backwards, the spent casing is ejected. As the buffer/spring expands again, a new round is chambered, and the gas key is seated around the gas tube, and the weapon is ready to fire again. Understandably, the whole gun gets hot, and while nothing melts, even without being under full-auto, I have to wait 30 minutes before putting the gun back in the case after firing a couple hundred rounds. Now, there is a "new thing" out that involves a gas piston instead of just gas pressure, and I'm not sure what the benefit is because it's an extra $250-500 to add to a rifle, and that doesn't include a new forearm. I haven't bothered looking into it.

I don't pay any particular attention to musicians' political rantings, and I was been convinced long ago that smoking causes cancer. I only do this WFAR thing a) because we can talk about anything in the lounge, and b) it appears to upset people (my OP was 1-voted by someone - probably a liberal or foreigner who couldn't follow simple instructions to avert their eyes). Despite Pete's theory that I'm over-compensating for something, that's not the case. Cavemen used to make their own tools, and you can probably bet that they tested and used those tools whenever they got the chance. That's what I'm doing. I'm sure a lot of folks here don't understand why I would want to build a computer to perform a task, when it's so much easier to just "buy something that works", as Elaine has already suggested in this thread. The simple fact of the matter is that I'm just not wired that way. And yes, the title of these posts is oriented in sarcasm, and specifically, targeted at you (not to be mean-spirited, but more to poke you in the ribs). :)

I also feel that the voting ability/function should be completely removed for the "lounge", it serves no purpose but to piss people off.

I agree, I shouldn't have to, but I do occasionally because I have a lot respect for some of the the people that frequent the site, and Christian is in that group. Besides, the act of explaining myself usually promotes further discussion, providing many opportunities to continue being a smart-ass. I think in the case of my WFAR posts, I've somehow desensitized many of the folks here, and that's a good thing. It just proves that a "gun enthusiast" isn't necessarily a "gun nut". :)
