When having installed Windows updates please provide a way to 'postpone' the update installation at shutdown. You're in hurry, you finally finish your work and when shutting down: "Installing update 3 of 36, please do not shutdown your computer..." :mad: sorry, had to get that off my chest ;P

Why not leave the computer to update and shut down? If you're in a hurry, why wait for shutdown?

Use hibernate instead of shutdown when you're in a hurry, and postpone the real shutdowns to when you have the time... Apart from that, I agree with you. And it's not just the shutdown. When you start it up again, you have to wait just as long while it "configures" the updates, whatever that means... One idea, though: If you use windows update to manually install the updates, then you can work while the updates are installing at least...

Which version are you running? Everything since XP has had an option to shut down without installing updates if you look for it.

Keying that in on the commandline will kill the Windows Update process, and it'll be gone until you reboot. It's important that you do that before hibernating, otherwise your computer may wake up when you need to use it and while you are looking away, reboot on it's own. But hibernating is indeed the way to avoid waiting :cool:

It's best when you get a blackout and the UPS initiates shutdown only for the battery to empty out while windows is installing its updates.

The UPS stands for at least 30 minutes, but if push comes to shove, I hibernate the damn thing. I will let it install the updates when I feel like doing it. :)

Lets assume that it is a laptop and he has to catch a plane (carrying laptop with him) in next 15 minutes. Waiting for this darn thing to install its updates can be quite painful in such a situation.

Or, as happened with mine lately, when it starts up it sits there for about 10 minutes "Configuring Update" until it convinces itself that it needs to revert the changes. But it doesn't revert. When I shut down it tries again, and when I next boot up it again sits for 10 minutes before reverting changes. This went onfor about a week. Every time I booted up I reminded myself that before I shut down I need to solve this issue. Then I'd proceed to work on whatever I was working on and shut down without remembering my problem. After about of week of cursing and swearing it just sorted itself out. -Rd
