Partion Magic is not compatible with Weven 64 bit yet. Windows does not work. It can see my drive but won't give it a letter, doesn't give me any sort of useful info. It just sucks, as usual. How can a simple thing like an external drive not work with Weven ?

I was unaware Partition Magic existed beyond Win XP. Most of what I need (creating and resizing partitions on a disk, modifying drive letters) can be done with "Computer Management", which is part of Windows. It works fine on Vista and 7. The one thing I'm not able to perform is a REAL defragmentation, where files are not only defragmented but also moved to one side of the partition so you can shrink a partition that has been in use for some time. :) PS: your subject line was not informative, it did not tell anything new.

Open up Computer Management --> Disk Management --> Choose your drive --> assign drive letter When Windows does not assign a drive letter to an external drive by default, it usually is a problem with the drive, either the drivers or the FA tables.

Memory sticks with more than one partition are not recognised by Windows either, which sucks badly (it finds the first partition but thats it)! Linux has no problem finding them :|

Thanks, but I had this conversation already, below. Assign a drive letter is disabled. The drive works fine under XP.

All I want is to force Windows to assign a drive letter to a drive that it can see. I just thought that given Windows won't do it, perhaps PM would.

It would appear that other people have had similar problems with 64 bit Win7 here.[^] especially with WD external drives personally I haven't but then I'm running 32 bit Win7. One of the solutions seems be to reinstall the device driver; uninstalling the driver (device manager – under USB controllers, look for usb mass storage, right click, and uninstall the driver, reboot the computer when asked for restart (before rebooting also shut down the disk), so reboot, when windows has restarted restart the disk, the driver is reinstalled.
People are more violently opposed to fur than leather because it's safer to harass rich women than motorcycle gangs

I'm using W764 with 3 different USB external drives, and a usb memory stick and have never had a single problem. Of course none of the drives is made by WD...

Is the drive offline? Launch the disk manager and see of it appears in the list. My guess is that since it has many partitions it appears offline. You have to bring it online using the disk management mmc console, I have had this issue a few times.

Try Partition Wizard[^] instead, it's free for personal use.

For moving data to one side of the partition you can try My Defrag[^]. It uses the Windows API's for defragmentation, so is very safe. -Saurabh

I'm curious. Why would you want multiple partitions on a memory stick?

Fold With Us![^]The same reason for partitioning a hard drive ;P It makes having more than one OS on a bootable memory stick much easier too :)
