An American rifle using Russian lacquered ammo? Interesting. I read somewhere that the lacquer they use destroys the chamber faster.

The shells are steel instead of brass, it has nothing to do with the projectile.

It's cheap - most brass-cased ammo is around $40 per 100 rounds, and most steel cased ammo is anywhere from 30-50% less. The ammo I bought this weekend cost $26 (including tax), but the stuff I normally buy is $32-$40/100. The down sides of using steel-cased ammo are: 0) Most ComBloc ammo burns dirty - so much so that your typical AR-15 needs cleaning every couple hundred rounds. 1) The steel casing can wear out a barrel faster than brass-cased ammo 2) You can't generally switch off between steel and brass in the same firing session because the steel cases tend to get stuck in the chamber. 3) The ammo is less accurate, and less consistent between cartridges. On the flip side, AK-47s digest steel-cased ammo just fine because their clearances are much less strict (and also not nearly as accurate as a result).

Actually, the newest stuff is polymer-coated (I won't run lacquer-coated ammo), although I did find an unspent 7.62x39 steel-cased round at the range that appears to be lacquer-coated, and brought it home, more as a desktop curiosity than anything else.

He meant the casing of the bullet, not the cartridge. I would expect steel cased rounds to fragment more. X|

It's more eco-friendly as the shells rust back into the earth in a shortish time frame, not like those yuppy brass shells that hang around forever.
Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them along with this slice of humble pie, that comes direct from the oven of shame, set at gas mark 'egg on your face'.

The rifle was successfully reassembled, and I even purchased some Russian steel-cased ammo to try in both the rifles, but real life (TM) took precedence once again, and prevented a range visit. Here's hoping the zombie apocalypse doesn't happen before next weekend, when I can run the rifle through its paces.
