Why Nokia Sucks today (and probably has for some time)

Lost my old phone a while back and got it replaced with a Nokia C5-00 (my works choice) around 3 weeks ago. One nice feature is that the Windows installer for all of the software is sitting in the phones memory, no CD-Rom to lose, no website to try and visit. Just one problem, the main app just wouldn't install (no 64bit version maybe?) rendering just about everything else useless. No matter how much I hunted around I couldn't figure out how to rearrange the selection of apps that appears on the phone's home page to those that I actually use. Then it started randomly turning itself off - nice and silently so that you just don't notice. This increased in frequency to the point that the phone basically died over the weekend. Fully charged battery, brand new SIM, and it's still a brick (albeit a very thin one). So work offered a replcaed C5-00 - um... no thanks. Alright what about a 5630 XpressMusic then? - OK I'll try it. Couldn't care less about the music player bit, but what the hey, I don't have to pay for it. First one fresh out of the box. In goes the battery and SIM, press the on-hook/power cycle button ... and ... nothing. Ok so maybe the battery's really flat (not good in a Phone that's supposed to be barely 2 months old). Whack on the charger ... and ... nothing. OK so maybe the battery's completely dead, get another 5630 swap the presumed dead battery into that one (sans SIM) press the button and ... it works no problem. Add the SIM and everything is good. First 5630 is brand spankin' new, fresh out of the box, and also thoroughly dead. Get the phone back to office and try getting the software off the mini CD-Rom (not on the phone itself unfortunately), but my laptop won't recognise the CD-Rom and i'm starting to suspect that it's not my laptop's problem. OK so I'll check out the website for software and drivers. In the mean time the headphones might be worth trying on the laptop. If it weren't for the fact that they're ALREADY BROKEN. Where the hell has their quality control gone - everything is just pre-broken or dying. Nokia SUCK. :wtf:

You can still do quality control in China as evidenced by the fact that not only does China make the world's worst steel, they also make some of the world's best steel. I've checked the phone over thoroughly and the only "Made In" that I can see is on the battery (which works obviously). It is made in China. As I understood it Nokia still manufacture the actual handsets in Finland. But maybe someone could correct me on that.

I would in general agree with you - however I still want to get things like contacts and appointments in and out of the phone - even if I have to put up with crappy software. While we're at it can someone ask Motorola why they insist on charging for their software when it is just so truly awful? At least the other manufacturers are not so conceited, recognise that their software qualifies as crapware, and give it away for free.

You can still do quality control in China as evidenced by the fact that not only does China make the world's worst steel, they also make some of the world's best steel. I've checked the phone over thoroughly and the only "Made In" that I can see is on the battery (which works obviously). It is made in China. As I understood it Nokia still manufacture the actual handsets in Finland. But maybe someone could correct me on that.

Time to update our metaphor I think. How about 'Tile'? Yeah..I tried getting my iPhone to run Linux and I tiled it. Man! I tried rooting my HTC Desire and now it's a total tile. or as in your case.... Doh! I took my Nokia out of the box and it's a tile. -Rd

My C5-00 says "Made in Hungary" in the label that's under the battery. Your phone should have a label with the serial number, IMEI code, etc. in the same place. Nokia makes some latest and top of the range handsets in Finland, but C5 and 5630 are cheap "consumer" models.
