But it is a bit boring when every game becomes a First Person Shooter derivative.

Brilliant description ;P I dont mind shooting games as long as it doesn't make me feel like im just pointing and clicking. I want something clever, fluid , something that can make me think twice before I randomly spray 1000 rounds at 10 people... Thanks :-D

I think its partly the fact (as you said) the money making generic business side but I think its more serious, "popular culture" make social groups less creative and responsive to change, I think we will see a increase on some generally decent games being published but ignored as people just don't care because its not "popular" :(

Totally agree. This is the same phenomenon that makes TV networks always cancel the good shows.

I am 19 so a lot of the games on the market i.e. "Medal Of Honour 2010" is aimed at my age group however... I think most games today (console and pc) just tend to annoy me , for example the "Call Of Duty" series: *Since Call of Duty Treyarch Series it went down hill, only the engine is updated but each increment game tends to become even more dumbed down (crosshair gets bigger, less recoil on guns, easier AI, infact by COD MW2 they removed the "Infinite spawning AI" completly)... *Graphics improve for mostly useless (my opinion) factors such as huge explosion effects that may had taken a month or so to direct when they could had improved in game bugs or just made it more authentic? *Large focus on multi player (actually CODMW2's multi player lobby's and such were very good apart from no dedicated servers!) tends to make allot of money for game developers , so much that they "glorify" endless 1990's death match style games to "reward" the player with game mechanic changing perks (such as better weapons) *The "Arcade" feel increases throughout... *I get 12 year old's shout verbal abuse at me for defeating them! (there is no more honour :( ) Other games such as GTAIV and even some modern racing games PGR4 are nothing new any-more, just improved eye candy but the game play is the same as before and in many cases (such with GTAIV) gets dumbed down and focuses on making it as linear and mainstream as possible! Sure I may had enjoyed these spoken games four 3or more hours but many take them to a new level of "game addiction"... And because of it more and more garbage games are released on the market and nothing really exciting is coming out either - I feel doomed! Just to show that I am not some fan boy having a rant, the game "Brink" coming out soon looks good, but I can guarantee absolutely no new content from it. I watched some videos of it and saw a feature that allows you to do some impressive "environmental interactive" abilities such as "Jump over a trap" or "slide under some obstacle" - Hasn't "Mirrors Edge" and other games owned this already? I now focus on "Indy" games such as "Defence Grid" and "Briad" as they offer something "new". :P

Many, many years ago a good friend and I had a hilarious afternoon on his old Commodore or Atari or something (I forget exactly what it was). It was a stupid little game where you had blocky biplanes and a barn in the middle of the screen. There were a few clouds too. The planes started at opposite ends of the screen and you took off - pull back too quickly and you flipped over, too slow and you crashed into the barn. Then you had a dogfight in the clouds. The graphics were crap - but we played for hours, pissing ourselves laughing (we weren't drunk!). It was brilliant in its infantile simplicity. I've never seen another computer game since that could reduce me to tears of laughter...!

Replaying Morrowind at the moment dumped into a world that is constantly trying to chew your face off with bad guys that wipe the floor with you until you get to a high enough level to take them out. None of that Oblivion namby pamby hand holding.

I also have the MOH Airborn and that was a fantastic game. I get maybe 15 mins a week to sit down and have a play with it, I dont want to be watching all these 'cut scenes'. It's like the game is more of a demo of what the hardware can do

That sounds remarkably like a game that was released as a cabinet game over here. One of my local boozers had one and, like yourself, my mates and I used to really laugh it up, playing it. That is the most modern video game I could play.

That is because, you are playing wrong games. Try "Battlefield Bad Company 2". It's epic game. solid single player campaign, and even awesome multilayer experience. The sound recording is unmatched, every gun will sound just real. Graphics are top of the line. you will need a very high end graphics card to play it. Overall it is satisfying game. watch some game-play videos on YouTube, and you can always buy cheaper at Steam. :) The game is hard to play, you cannot just run and gun here. also team work is very important, solo cannot win the match, no matter how good you are. Vehicles are also nice addition to the game. I played the beta of Medal of Honor and it was frustrating. they tried to make Battlefield Bad Company like Call of the Duty - Modern Warfare 2. and they have failed in both the sides. :) OT: It's raining 5 votes here... :omg:

It seems to be some kind of anti-univoter campaign. As though we have slipped through a crack in reality and landed ourselves in some alternate universe where everything is backwards, or what that be a pentaverse?

Nope, it is not. I never really got hooked on anything that company made and Starcraft the least of all. Until recently I would have had some trouble explaining what I have against Blizzard. After reading an article about conditioning rats (!) I finally do know why. Interesting enough, Blizzard's products were mentioned more than once in the article.

A while ago he asked me what he should have printed on my business cards. I said 'Wizard'. I read books which nobody else understand. Then I do something which nobody understands. After that the computer does something which nobody understands. When asked, I say things about the results which nobody understand. But everybody expects miracles from me on a regular basis. Looks to me like the classical definition of a wizard.

If you have a decent PC, then I would heartily recommend the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. trilogy of games. Shadow of Chernobyl is the first and probably my favorite game of all time. Clear Sky is the next, and Call of Prypiat the last (and my least favourite) of the series. Shadow of Chernobyl takes a bit of getting into, but once you understand what you have to do it is one of the most addictive and atmospheric games I have ever played - don't let the first map put you off, it's meant to be a bit boring as it's teaches you the ropes etc. The difficulty level is pretty steep as well, get shot in the head and you die - even on the easiest settings. You die a lot, and if you don't plan attacks and take enough ammo with you, you haven't got a chance :) If you haven't it played before, buy a copy - it's only £5 or so from Amazon. Also download and install the 'Stalker xxx Complete' mods for each game (I don't think Call of Prypiat Complete' is out yet, but no matter) - which are free and written by fans of the series. The 'Complete' series of mods upgrade the graphics and fix any left over bugs in the gameplay that were left by the developers. OT: I can't stand the Call of Duty franchise - it's boring run and gun, no tactics, no thinking required. Just follow your designated path and shoot. Booooorrrrrrring. STALKER is just so different I love it. I'm playing Clear Sky through again now for the third time, with the 'Complete' mod installed - it's like falling in love again. And after I played 'Medal of Honor' at the weekend over at a mates, I know I'm not missing anything! :)

Yes, sick and tired. There was a time when I could not leave a store without some new fodder for the computer, but this has gotten less and less. 'Dumbed down' is a good way to describe what has happened. Also, they keep on making the same stuff over and over again and the only progress seems to be better graphics and more simplistic gameplay. And then there are those online games. Nothing against that, except that they have taken all the fun out of it and turned the whole thing in an endless competition against other players. They make their paying customers work hard to keep whatever they have accomplished in the game, so that they invest more and more time. Sorry, but if I want some real challenges and some stress, then I go see my boss and tell him that I'm bored. At least he does not yet want me to pay for that.

Me and my friends still play Total Annihilation[^] occasionally. If your only 19 you may never have heard of it. It's a top down isometric RTS. It's got a kind of 3d physics though for the missiles and explosions. It's network code is a bit sketchy, so we only really play when we meet up for an old style "LAN party". (LAN party's were what we had back in the old day before the inter-tubes were invented.) The great thing about it though is that although it's over 10 years old, they had the foresight to make the resolution scale up to whatever your running, so it still looks all right on a new pc with a nice high res screen.

Battletoads needs to be brought back. One of the most challenging games ever but you'd rather slash your own wrists than admit defeat because you *can* just make it away from that stupid boulder coming at you. I still preferred FF6 though. Although 2 was amusing where you could build your party's stats up by making them hit each other while a single bewildered goblin looks on.
