online games
I have several game design books that state that a "game without a goal is a flawed game" - If only the consumers realized xD :-D Thanks :)
I know somebody who cannot work anymore because of an illness. Years ago he proclaimed that he will never pay for online games. Now he plays them all day, only interrupted by the little sleep his illness permits. He actually has a schedule where and when he and his 'allies' have to go in the game to get the optimal amount of experience points (or whatever) every day. And when I visited him for the last time before moving away he did not have time for me. He had just gathered his 'friends' and started some very important attack on (insert uninteresting bla bla here). This is scary and I have no interest in ending like this.
A while ago he asked me what he should have printed on my business cards. I said 'Wizard'. I read books which nobody else understand. Then I do something which nobody understands. After that the computer does something which nobody understands. When asked, I say things about the results which nobody understand. But everybody expects miracles from me on a regular basis. Looks to me like the classical definition of a wizard.

I am 19 so a lot of the games on the market i.e. "Medal Of Honour 2010" is aimed at my age group however... I think most games today (console and pc) just tend to annoy me , for example the "Call Of Duty" series: *Since Call of Duty Treyarch Series it went down hill, only the engine is updated but each increment game tends to become even more dumbed down (crosshair gets bigger, less recoil on guns, easier AI, infact by COD MW2 they removed the "Infinite spawning AI" completly)... *Graphics improve for mostly useless (my opinion) factors such as huge explosion effects that may had taken a month or so to direct when they could had improved in game bugs or just made it more authentic? *Large focus on multi player (actually CODMW2's multi player lobby's and such were very good apart from no dedicated servers!) tends to make allot of money for game developers , so much that they "glorify" endless 1990's death match style games to "reward" the player with game mechanic changing perks (such as better weapons) *The "Arcade" feel increases throughout... *I get 12 year old's shout verbal abuse at me for defeating them! (there is no more honour :( ) Other games such as GTAIV and even some modern racing games PGR4 are nothing new any-more, just improved eye candy but the game play is the same as before and in many cases (such with GTAIV) gets dumbed down and focuses on making it as linear and mainstream as possible! Sure I may had enjoyed these spoken games four 3or more hours but many take them to a new level of "game addiction"... And because of it more and more garbage games are released on the market and nothing really exciting is coming out either - I feel doomed! Just to show that I am not some fan boy having a rant, the game "Brink" coming out soon looks good, but I can guarantee absolutely no new content from it. I watched some videos of it and saw a feature that allows you to do some impressive "environmental interactive" abilities such as "Jump over a trap" or "slide under some obstacle" - Hasn't "Mirrors Edge" and other games owned this already? I now focus on "Indy" games such as "Defence Grid" and "Briad" as they offer something "new". :P
And another thing: My favorite game still is Visual Studio. Endless levels with difficulties from trivial to super genius :) And the greatest adventure is still writing a game of your own.

Tend to mostly agree. Bugs me when Monte Cristo released Cities XL (a city builder sim like SimCity) the game had so many bugs and rather than fixing them or adding something useful like the ability to rename streets and buildings they wasted god knows how long on adding loads of really annoying xmas decorations that appear throughout December (bogging everyones computer down btw and generally being excessive and annoying). And then essential things like buses were charged as a monthly fee on top of the initial price of the game. I recently went in Game to hunt for Crysis but as they didn't have it ended up getting C&C 4 instead to see that series has been completely messed up. I used to love C&C Generals but now they've got rid of the base so its basically just units fighting each other, buying the units is free (though you can only have a limited number at any one time) and it's basically turned into some annoying domination game that just includes the worst bits from the previous games and scraps anything that was any good. Plus even when playing against the computer if you're net connection goes down part way through your progress isn't saved, so you basically lose the game.

Battletoads (the original one) was awesome, along with FF6. FF6 I've beaten countless times and gotten all the items too. Classics like these are hard to come by these days. It seems too many games just rehash the old over and over, that's that makes gaming today a bit boring. Resident Evil 2 was also very challenging and unique, in that *you always run out of bullets during boss fights leaving you to come up with clever ways to knife the hell out of the boss in under 5 minutes before the entire complex explodes for no apparent reason*.

I agree to a large degree. That is why every December I install Baldur's Gate 2 and relive the awesomeness, there is a depth to it that no other game has matched yet. I had hoped that Dragon Age could fill the void left by BG 2 but that didn't happen. It is getting harder to find new experiences in games. You've done the same kinda missions hundreds of times over but even RL is like that at the end of the day.

answer if boredom is the question.
I have Star Craft 2, its sticks to it roots which I respect and the visuals are great! No fun for causal gamers on-line though , the game play forces people to have to become "profession" to be able to play on-line decently. (another reason why its awesome) My only qualm with it is that its RTS style has been done/redone so many times since it first came out that its not that special (even "Command and Conquer Tiberium War" had to compete with that!) Surely there can be some interesting non generic features that could had been implemented to make it "unique" ? Such as the resource system, what cool stuff could had been applied if the player had the ability to "Steal" resources (it sounds shallow as im sure there are many creative ideas out there but im tired!) Thanks :P
I agree with the profession thing. I have a couple of game that I take quite seriously (HoN, previously MW2 - now MoH 2010); and I can't dedicate the mind-space to SC2. Because I can't dedicate as much time as I should to be a proper SC2 player I have lost out. They simply don't cater for (most probably because they want to discourage) casual players. This is a bold marketting step to take; and unfortunately I can't get a refund. They should have it in the system requirements "ability to play SC2 exclusively". If you want a unique RTS experience try Total Annihilation or it's spiritual successor Supreme Commander (don't go near SupCom 2 though; it lost the spirit and is more like SC). They have some nice quirks (like the ability to spend money you don't have yet, no resource gatherers and a lot of other goodness).

Defintely same old; but because MW2 had such good market share they needed to do something special (and revolutionizing a genre is no easy task). MoH has perfect execution IMHO; I couldn't want anything more from the game play, multiplayer experience, control immersion and UI. Admittedly I have not played (or even downloaded) the single player component - but multiplayer is really spot on.

Replaying Morrowind at the moment dumped into a world that is constantly trying to chew your face off with bad guys that wipe the floor with you until you get to a high enough level to take them out. None of that Oblivion namby pamby hand holding.

Try supporting the bigger indy shops. I have a couple of smaller indy games (that I never play, but decided to support the developer none-the-less) but I get a lot more ROI from shops like S2 (makers of Savage and Heroes of Newerth). S2 is quite literally my next Blizzard; well-earned zealous fans. As far as racing games go; while not indy, Blur is pretty good. It has merged two racing genres in a refreshingly brilliant way. I haven't played it online, but have had some good laughs (which you never get from other racing games) in single player. If you want something that is always new, you should consider play-testing for XNA indie devs[^]. That way you can actually shape the outcome of games and bring the game industry closer to what you think it should be. FYI: MW2 is a walk in the park (and really annoying IRT the lobby/serverless system) after you have spent a few good hours playing MoH.
