Anyone getting tired of todays video games?

I am 19 so a lot of the games on the market i.e. "Medal Of Honour 2010" is aimed at my age group however... I think most games today (console and pc) just tend to annoy me , for example the "Call Of Duty" series: *Since Call of Duty Treyarch Series it went down hill, only the engine is updated but each increment game tends to become even more dumbed down (crosshair gets bigger, less recoil on guns, easier AI, infact by COD MW2 they removed the "Infinite spawning AI" completly)... *Graphics improve for mostly useless (my opinion) factors such as huge explosion effects that may had taken a month or so to direct when they could had improved in game bugs or just made it more authentic? *Large focus on multi player (actually CODMW2's multi player lobby's and such were very good apart from no dedicated servers!) tends to make allot of money for game developers , so much that they "glorify" endless 1990's death match style games to "reward" the player with game mechanic changing perks (such as better weapons) *The "Arcade" feel increases throughout... *I get 12 year old's shout verbal abuse at me for defeating them! (there is no more honour :( ) Other games such as GTAIV and even some modern racing games PGR4 are nothing new any-more, just improved eye candy but the game play is the same as before and in many cases (such with GTAIV) gets dumbed down and focuses on making it as linear and mainstream as possible! Sure I may had enjoyed these spoken games four 3or more hours but many take them to a new level of "game addiction"... And because of it more and more garbage games are released on the market and nothing really exciting is coming out either - I feel doomed! Just to show that I am not some fan boy having a rant, the game "Brink" coming out soon looks good, but I can guarantee absolutely no new content from it. I watched some videos of it and saw a feature that allows you to do some impressive "environmental interactive" abilities such as "Jump over a trap" or "slide under some obstacle" - Hasn't "Mirrors Edge" and other games owned this already? I now focus on "Indy" games such as "Defence Grid" and "Briad" as they offer something "new". :P

You do not mean "i.e.". You mean "e.g.". Since 95% of people don't know what "i.e." means, we're better off writing "for example" instead. What you have written is equivalent in programming terms to saying "the only game on the market is Medal of Honor 2010", which sounds pretty silly since you just got done referring to "a lot of games on the market". I can't expect most people to understand the difference, but programmers at least ought to be able to get it!

I assume you mean "Braid". I've heard that's a thought-provoking game. Yes, I agree with you in general about today's games. We'd be far better off if there were fewer of them, and they were each more interesting and unique.

It's true, some of those games were good. I have an original arcade Space Invaders. Any of you who have played Space Invaders are probably aware of the UFO strategy, whereby you count your laser shots to obtain maximum points on each UFO hit (300 is the max). I lay down the challenge to anyone here to deduce the UFO point algorithm by hitting the UFO with each laser shot in order. i.e. hit a UFO with your first laser shot, hit the next UFO with your second laser shot, etc. (Do not hit any invaders with any shot). It's very difficult. I've done it. You are allowed to cheat by restarting at any time. e.g. Once you've figured out the value of the first and second shots, if you hit an invader with your third shot, you can restart the game and waste your first 2 shots (or hit invaders with them) to quickly get to the third shot. Report back once you figure out the UFO point scheme, and can reverse engineer the code in any language of your choice (hint: use a hash table for the shot values.) :-) I bring this up partly to brag, and partly to agree with the OP that it's more interesting to put less time into making explosions and more time into mind-challenging game play.

The problem is that the games on the shelves are published by incredibly large companies that want to make as much profit as possible, so like pop music they're aiming for the largest user base possible. Which is also why we see a lot of sequels that are pretty much the same but with nicer graphics, because there's an existing user base already there that they can take advantage of. Multiplayer and networking are really good though, MAG is a superb example of what's possible now. The downside as you've pointed out of course is you do have to put up with the whiney prepubescent kids. There are occasional gems though like Assassins Creed and Uncharted, but if you want something that is just fun then you'll have to look up some smaller developers who aren't simply the puppet of some huge publisher.
My current favourite phrase: Iv'e seen better!

Plants vs. Zombies, great game. Ten bucks through Steam. A no-brainer (that will sound funny once you've played the game by the way.)

Elite may still be my all-time favourite game. I still regret that I never made it past 'Deadly'
Reaching deadly should be something to be proud of, not something to regret surpassing. That is bloody hard to do!

Definitely have to recommend Total Annihilation. Fun game. I'd also have to recommend a couple of other classics that even with age are fun: 1) XCom: UFO Defense[^] - Great game. Turn based squad strategy game. Kill aliens, throw grenades, and save civilians. What's not to like? 2) Master of Orion II: Battle of Antares[^] - Space empire strategy game. Lots of options and tactics available and a new universe each time, makes for high replay factor. 3) Battlefield 2[^] - Much like its successors, FPS with well rounded solid gameplay and well done mechanics. You don't need the top of the line machine to run it and the community is shrinking, but it's still a good solid game.

Have you tried MineCraft out? Pretty fun from all reports. Portal 2 should be something different again. All the Monkey Island games are getting re-released. I highly recommend them. Although perhaps it is just the nostalgia making them fun. And some other games I've heard are good: Touch football (aussie style of course), squash, field hockey, indoor cricket, chess, go. Also go-fish or any card game with a three year is one of the funnest games possible.

I have Star Craft 2, its sticks to it roots which I respect and the visuals are great! No fun for causal gamers on-line though , the game play forces people to have to become "profession" to be able to play on-line decently. (another reason why its awesome) My only qualm with it is that its RTS style has been done/redone so many times since it first came out that its not that special (even "Command and Conquer Tiberium War" had to compete with that!) Surely there can be some interesting non generic features that could had been implemented to make it "unique" ? Such as the resource system, what cool stuff could had been applied if the player had the ability to "Steal" resources (it sounds shallow as im sure there are many creative ideas out there but im tired!) Thanks :P
Totally agree. It's not really possible to "casually" play SC2 against real life people. Maybe against AI you can, and the same goes for the campaign, but most real people will kick your butt in a match if you screw around for more than a couple of seconds of actual game play, especially at the beginning. It's really one of those games that might need too much of your attention, which is why I only play a couple of hours a week instead of the 5+ a day some far better-skilled people I know do. Still awesome though!

If you like indy games, you should definitely check out Minecraft. It's basically like Legos on your computer, on steroids. While I totally understand it isn't for everyone, I find it to be one of the most creative games I've ever played. Especially if you love(d) Legos.

I have it too :P Completed it twice (all 50 levels) xD Very creative , some people dedicate allot of time to that game for "level based tactics" xD Thanks again :-D ... Its good to know allot of people on here recognise these kind of games !

Then I recommend MASM. This game also has unlimited levels, but tends to be a bit more abstract and generally harder. Too bad I did not have time to play it in quite a while :)
A while ago he asked me what he should have printed on my business cards. I said 'Wizard'. I read books which nobody else understand. Then I do something which nobody understands. After that the computer does something which nobody understands. When asked, I say things about the results which nobody understand. But everybody expects miracles from me on a regular basis. Looks to me like the classical definition of a wizard.
Still too much for my processor, I guess ill have to stick with http://compsoc.dur.ac.uk/whitespace/[^]

Some good games there, oddly enough.... "Battlefield 2" - I personally think is a great game! Its fun, can be competitive and was regularly updated and patched but best of all it was PC only! ... Sadly the other BF games only consider "console based ports" :( Thanks !

It has nothing to do with your age. You either understand the usage or you don't. If you do, then you used it wrong. If you don't, then take the time to learn. Those who read Code Project, of all people, should understand syntaxy things like this. Since so many people get it wrong, I addressed the whole community, not just you. It's not just a nit. It can lead to incorrect application behavior. e.g. and i.e are both used very frequently in software specification documents. If you write "the user can pick a color, i.e. red, yellow or blue", then you have just provided a complete list of colors, and none others are allowed.
