Hey, all - I'm messing around with generating some simple animations. I'm storing them in uncompressed .avi format, to facilitate editing/cutting/joining segments; I plan on selecting a codec and final output format later. So the question, is this: does anyone know of a free (or nearly free) .avi editing program I can use to work with the uncompressed raw footage? Goggle will of course point at any number, but I'd like to hear of something someone here might have actually used.

VirtualDub[^] is what I use for working with clips. I generally use it for combining single frames into animations and then applying filters etc., but it can be used for all kinds of video processing. Cheers, Drew.

It's not too bad. If you can afford the bandwidth for a download, give it a try to see if it suits.

Do yourself a favour and grab a Cinema4D Trial.

Check out Microsoft's 'free' Windows Live Essentials - Movie Maker. Simple, fast, transistions and video clip start/end points. I've tried a few higher end products too ... but for doing simple editing, seems to work great.

I use a variant of VirtualDub called VirtualDubMod which has some extra format support (inc MPEG-2).

I have to agree. It's free and works for simple edits, adding titles, sound tracks etc. Personally I would have preferred something that ran on both Windows and Linux.

i'll actually second this. however inflammatory that may be to my limited reputation on here :) i've been using WMM since it was packaged w/ Vista and it's always fit my editing needs thus far.
