One way ticket. I guess it would be akin to the pilgrims coming to America so many years ago. I wonder if there are any pilgrims left in the world that would seriously do it?

I think you would be overwhelmed by volunteers, even for a one way ticket, especially if there was a reasonable chance of long term survival. There are a lot of wannabe space nuts out here.

I've signed myself up for it (telling them that I was CSS), and told them to ignore anything "I" say that it wasn't me who signed up; just pack "me" into the luggage hold and shoot me off there.

I would go! Can you imagine the Kudos! Even if it were one way I would be famous and renowned for ever. Plus, having been round the world a few times it would be nice to go somewhere new.

I wouldn't mind going to colonize some planet, just that i don't like the one-way part. You got any ID what kind of loading times you would have for a website. The delay in mailing someone. Or worse... No internet at ALL!!! Now the moon, thats more interesting.

"Supplies would be continuously sent to make them self-sufficient." -That's sort of the definition of dependant, the opposite of self sufficient? :~ "Two researchers suggest four volunteer astronauts could undertake the first mission to permanently colonize Mars." Make the other volunteer Natalie Portman and I'd sign up in a trice, Mars would be populated in no time :-).

You do understand that hardware production time usually significantly exceeds the time required for the starting shot issued by managment?

Carrying supplies through space is a tad cheaper than carrying humans that expect to survive.

How you figure? The way I see it is that sending rockets with supplies there is one thing but getting that rocket back is another. To get the rocket back it has to land safely and then be able to take off again and have enough fuel for the return trip. I have no idea about the costs of building a rocket but it is possible that building one is cheaper than the fuel it uses for the return trip and the added costs of having it land safely and take of again.

Part of the supplies, on several trips, would be additional fuel tanks which could be parked in orbit. When sufficient tanks are there the lander would blast off, collect the fuel and away we go. Better yet, a larger supply of fuel and provisions could be assembled in Earth orbit by allocating a small portion of each of the ISS provisioning trips to that purpose.

If that's all you care about there are easier ways. Anybody can become famous as long as they don't want to be able to carry on with life as normal afterwards. Prisons and Graveyards are chock full of people that are famous for what they did or how they died. -Rd

Maybe, maybe not. Research done with frog(?) embryos in microgravity has shown that some degree of gravity is needed for proper development; assuming the same is true of humans the question becomes how much?
