How do you come up with your projects' names? Seriously, I have lots of ideas that go to waste just because I can't find a name...

I normally start with an acronym and fill in the letters later. Examples: ANEMICS, NADS, NETS.

If you're really stuck use http://online-generator.com/name-generator/project-name-generator.php as it gives random names like Black Pure Poseidon Aggressive Full Firecracker Eastern Screwdriver Big Moose The big trend at the moment is adding a 'er' on the end of what its for. This is my most common technique. I.E. An app that keeps track of stock: Stock Tracker.

If you don't know what to call it, call it 'Enigma'. We did that once for an email management system since we didn't know why we were writing soooo much code to replace MS Outlook + macros.

I try to think of something clever and catchy and relevant. But if nothing comes to mind within a minute or two I'll go with my "Retro" naming convention by adding a or suffix from this list to the relevant noun or verb:

            • '-o-matic'
            • '-o-rama'
            • '-a-gogo'
            • 'magic'

            examples:

            • WidgOMatic
            • MagicWidget
            • TweetORama
            • TrackMagic
            • InventoryAGogo

...you get the idea. Works for nouns and verbs! Endless fun. Sometimes I'll even do a logo. If none of those strike me, I'll use the generic 'Thingy', as in 'WidgetThingy' or 'DataFileCleanupThingy'.

If I pay less, can I not have the Artificial Stupidity, please?

Real men don't use instructions. They are only the manufacturers opinion on how to put the thing together.

I think it must be known in some circles that thinking of a name is a large stumbling block for a project, as you well know. And this must be why Microsoft gives its projects code names. I like to follow the same principle in my own work. The code is what's really important, I'll think of the name later!

Now I learn something too. That sounds like a good idea for initial naming of a project. Thx.

Open a Thesaurus at random. Not literally, of course. I just so did, and arrived at a project name called: "Vetust", (Venerable from antiquty) It is as good as anything else.

Yet_Another_GUI_# - for interface projects Yet_Another_Project# - all other stuff replace # with any number.

You could use this format when naming your children. Child 1, Child 2, Child 3 .... and they could name there children, Child 1, Child 2, Child 3 ... And if everybody did this, then at school the teacher could check which children where in by reading the names; "Is Child 1 in", in in here in in present in here, "Child 1", ... PS Twins would be Child 1a and Child 1b.
