especially when they are trying to seem smart. I have a support technician that can't do anything by himself. I don't think he can wipe his ass properly. There's an online/offline state in an application I develop and maintain. He: "It doesn't work if I do X in offline mode." I: "Does X work in online mode?" He: "I don't know." I: <Wanting to strangle him for not even testing it before coming to me with it> "Could you please test it for me?" He: "So, function X isn't working in the same way as function Y?" (Why the fuck does he care???) I: <Wanting to strangle him again> "No." Even if I explained the basic differences between function X and Y, he wouldn't get it. I've tried so many times explaining things for him, but he doesn't get it. I have even helped him in support cases, telling him exactly what to do. To the letter. Still can't do it. FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK. This is driving me insane. John Simmons, get your ass over here and use your guns...

It has often seemed to me that the one skill you need most to provide support is the one that most of those in the job lack. All too often it I get fed up of have you tried, this have you tried this, have you tried this, that it is less painful and distracting to just do their damn job for them. I don't mind telling anyone something once, maybe twice, but the some thing over and over again - you shouldn't have this jobj. Good support staff are incredibly hard to find.

Every man can tell how many goats or sheep he possesses, but not how many friends.

Truth! And this guy also has the stomach to complain when he has to work 1 minute over time. WTF?

Yes. It requires at the very least simple deductive skills. They can't just run to development guys with messages such as "It doesn't work!".

Would that be: - people skills - deductive skills - brains - actual computer knowledge - all of the above

The last place I contracted for, when I got a new computer, a support technician was sent to install Vis Studio, SqlServer, and Expression. He was 19 or 20 and the nephew of the head of IT. He brought all the CDs handed them to me and then proceeded to sit right outside my cube and watch me install them. That way, he confided, it was a win-win. I knew how to install the disks; he'd be able to bring them back as soon as i was through with them; and nobody could send him out on another call until then.
