I am looking for software (not free stuff) for my daughters boss. He wants to run his order entry, inventory and sales on a web site so that nobody will need to be in the office. They sell and install fancy telephone systems, so it needs quotes and sales items exploding into its component parts. Currently this is done in excel spreadsheets. They have a web server running Apache server but they are not hung up on it running there. Now I could write this from scratch no problem but he just about fell of his chair when I quoted what custom software would cost him :omg: so I thought I would ask what there was out there people would recommend. I posted this in the web development forum too but I thought I might get more general responses here.

Sound to me that your client is in the market for an ERP system. Get the right one for your client and you will most likely find that there is a web-based front-end to it. Microsoft GP and Microsoft Nav come instantly to mind depending on your client's requirements. Also Sage 500 and Sage 1000.

You completely left out service management or I'd jump right in. :) I guess they don't actually do the work?

Hi That would be the next phase. They do the installation, training, and all repairs and troubleshooting ("Is the phone plugged in?" during the meeting) and warranty services. Small shop growing fast.

I was kind of hoping someone would jump up and down shouting "look here wonderful stuff we/they wrote!"

Joomla is a pretty good framework to start with. There is a forms component for it that is quite cheap and can handle the kind of data you are referring to and there are plenty of other modules that could do the stock and quotes.
