So today I got my fourth bill from Bell and I noticed a very interesting line that was not there in the past 3 bills as shown below:

Your November e-bill for your xxx-xxx-xxxx mobile number(s) is available online.

The total balance for the month is $ x. Please pay by* 11/29/2010

Thats interesting indeed because I always pay my bills the moment I get them but this got me thinking are they rude or simply need the money for the next pay cheque?

It is very common in the UK for bills to have a pay by date. Although most are paid by Direct Debit.

I never get a bill that does not advise me of the fees if I don't pay by a certain date.

You mean that you get bills that don't give you a pay by date, I don't think I have seen one of them in decades.

In the past three ebills from Bell they only said you have $x to pay and thats it. In this one they mentioned please pay it by the given date.

Do you guys have trouble stopping Direct Debits? In Australia it is common for the vendor to continue taking your cash (with the banks' blind assistance), sometimes for months after you have asked them to cancel a payment method, with a measly "soryy we F'd up" after all the hassle. I won't let any entity take money directly from my accounts (exept bank fees of course.) I always pay the bill myself.

If I'm canceling a direct debit with a vendor, I always contact the bank and have them cancel the instruction at their end as well. No instruction at the bank = no money withdrawn from my accounts.

I never pay such fees, even if I haven't paid by the set date. It's a well hidden fact that such fees are not legally supported for consumer services, even if they're writ large in the contract (often, large chunks of a service contract are unlawful, because they're written by know-nothing jerks who think they can impose any conditions they feel like imposing). If they keep insisting that you pay the fees, let them take you to court. As long as you've paid for the services they've provided (paying ten minutes before the court date is fine, if you can print out proof of payment), they'll lose and have to pay your costs (so be sure to inflate them appropriately).

I do so enjoy sticking it to the sub-human b*st*rds who work for the collection departments of service companies.

I got my latest bill for Sky TV today, and there was £3.95 for a pay per view movie (to incur ridicule I will admit it was Hannah Montana but attempt to protest is what not me that watched it). I asked my wife why she had been watching such tat and paying for it too. She swore at me and said she had not done any such thing. Then I noticed the date the film was supposedly watched, it was 22nd November. Odd I thought. Then I noticed the year, 2009. Hmm.
