Android phone (again)

I'm sure this is probably a bit of a worn-out topic for this forum, but I'm going to go and get myself an Android phone today. What's the current best-of breed, in the opinion of my fellow CPians? Anyone have any success/horror stories to tell me before I part with my hard-earned cash?

Out of the Android lot I would get the Motorola Defy. Even though it's not the best in terms of specifications, it's water, dust and scratch resistant and has a decent price. I also like the solid, Chuck Norris look. I'm still gonna buy an LG Optimus 7 next week, though.

Righty, so it's either stick with my ancient but still functional Nokia, or get a smartphone of some description and live with the shorter battery life. Gadzooks. Nah, dammit. I need a new toy. I think I'll go for the HTC Desire, not the HD one. I think it'th very thexy.
I've had my Desire since April and it's doing very well, still happy with it. I could resolve my battery woes really by buying a spare micro-usb cable and just plug it into my work machine. Unfortunately it seems that the evolution of mobile innards is racing off faster than new battery tech can keep up.

Gonna be interested to hear what you have to say on that, I had a play with an HD7 yesterday and was pretty impressed. Very responsive and the interface is a fresh move away from grids of icons. If it had a built in sat nav I'd honestly go and get one now, it's the only thing holding me back as Google Navigation is just brilliant.

Google just released "Nexus S". May be you could check for some reviews (too early for reviews). I am happy with my N1.

I have an HTC Wildfire. I like the size, the screen is nice and clear and it feels well built. However, I think it is probably a little underpowered for an Android system. It frequently pauses and feels unresponsive when you do something. I suspect it's bigger brothers (the Desire/DesireHD) are probably better.

HTC Desire. Best phone I've ever had (and I've had two iPhones).

Unfortunately if you're looking for decent battery life, Android isn't where you want to be. I'd still take one any day over an iPhone, but my Desire just about gets me home with a fair amount of use throughout the day. I've heard similar complaints from Galaxy S users as well. I kinda get what you mean when the Galaxy S interface looks a little like the iPhone one, but it's easy dismissed with one short, sharp statement: Apple did not invent grids of icons :)

I can get 2 days out of my HTC Desire. I turn off WiFi when I don't need it, I don't have it polling Facebook every 5 minutes and I turned off the screens auto-brightness option. Turing off WiFi (via a widget on one of my home screens) makes the biggest difference according to the battery usage page.

Yep wifi is the big suck I've noticed too, I rarely have it on at all. The screen I have permanently set to max brightness as that only accounts for 2% of a days usage for me, I can live with losing 2% :) The built in sense apps various bits are only polling once a day. I only have a few other widgets running from market apps, none set to poll more than an hour, 2 of the 7 home screens completely empty, a static wallpaper. Still, the vast majority of the battery drain now is down to "Android System".

There are various ways of prolonging the battery life of a Desire. Tinkering with settings is one, recalibrating the battery stats is another, and of course how you use it. Anything that is on all the time is going to use a lot of power.

Meh, I'm not going to worry about it too much. Plan on getting something else in a month or 2 and I'm pretty tempted by WP7. But for how I use the Desire and how I have it set up, I believe I shouldn't have to worry if my battery is going to make it to the end of the day or not. I never did with my old iPhone, but I'm happy to take the battery hit for the features an Android phone provides over an iPhone.

HTC Desire. Best phone I've ever had (and I've had two iPhones).
So you think Its better than the Two of yours iPhones?? If it is then its really matter of thinking for me, while I think iPhone is the best among all in the market. As I am planning to buy iPhone 4 in very near future so it can affect my decision. Please tell me exactly what drive you crazy for Desire against iPhone.
