Question of the day

I had a discussion last night with what could only be nicely discribed as a Linux bigot. One of the arguements was that Windows sucked because friends of his got blue screens on NT 4 servers. Linux is a far superior network OS because you can start the machine, walk away, and come next year and it will still be running. Didn't seem phased by the evidence that a W2K machine can be the same way. This person also used the tired aurguement that no worthwhile network OS could be taken down by a simple email virus. Even went so far to say viruses were impossible for Linux.
To be fair, *nix systems tend have 99.9999% stability or thereabouts, and the architecture is such that offending processes can be shut down and restarted at the drop of a hat without affecting the rest of the system. Win32 on the other hand has a different architecture and the stability in my experience is less than that of a *nix system. I'm not too sure what the stability of linux is though in comparison to say, solairs, but I'd expect it to be rather good. People measure the success of OS based on what they choose. You could argue that windows is superior due to it's richer API and programming tools. MacOSX for it's usability and appearance. Regards Barry

The nice thing about bigots is that they seem to be evenly distributed across anything. You have your Mac bigots, Windows biguts, Linux bigots... :-D I think the core difference between Linux and Windows is the assumptions made about its users. Windows tends to think that users don't want to spend a lot of time setting up and installing, and want something up and running and ready to go as quickly as possible. Linux, on the other hand, gives the users control over just about every aspect, so the user can spend some time setting it up just right. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

The reason Linux is so stable is because there are no applications for it.
