At least it was an easy fix.

Most user problems can be solved by the use of a slap, often hard, across the back of the user's head!

More CSI and Criminal Minds. Although I favour the Gene Hunt[^] approach to 'Educating' people.

Amen. Call # 2. "The text on the Westlaw site is really small. I can't read it." "Hold the Ctrl key, then scroll the mouse wheel." "The one in the middle?" "Yes." "I already tried that." "Scroll the other direction." "Do I have to push it in?" "No." "Okay, that's better now..." It's hard to get any development done when smacking head against desk. :) Gary

IMO, it's a bad solution to a real problem.

            Watched code never compiles.

I would suggest NOT using this technique on the wife when trying to work on certain issues that might .... Oh never mind! :)

Probie... Just joking, I watched a lot of CSI (the 3 series) but got bored when I realized that H. killed more people than the criminals... I like a lot more NCIS, I like the characters (DiNozzo/Gibbs in first place). Criminal Minds is really good, sometime is really creepy (like the cannibal case).

Call number one from a manager. "My computer is making weird noises when I turn it on, beeping and whatnot, before the login screen. Want to hear?" "Sure." Fumbling of the phone, then . He comes back on the phone after a bit. "Did you hear that?" "No." "You're kidding?" "No, I'll be down." Sauntering down, me thinks of the possibilities. Application, O.S., hardware, user error. Ah, must be user error. Arrive at the manager's desk. On the PC screen, an Invalid Profile message, choose a profile from below, you'll loose your settings... Well, this doesn't look good. "Mind if I reboot?" I ask. "No, go ahead." Comes up normally to Windows loading. "It should have started beeping already," I'm told. It is then that I notice the 1.5 pounds of bundled mail sitting next to his keyboard :wtf: . "Was the mail laying on the keyboard by any chance?" I ask. "Yes... Oh... Never mind... :-O " It's gonna be one of those days! Gary

I had to deal with a user's problem (not a user problem) last week. In my new job, we all do everything, so I took it on myself to help a colleague out who had removed a user's PC from the domain. All local accounts (Administrator and Guest) were disabled. I used my l33t h2x0r skills and enabled local Admin and reset the local Admin password. Then I reset the machine account on the domain controller, and the user account. I could still not log on to the domain, even using the domain admin account. We left the poor user with a working local logon, and I doubt he will see the domain for some time. Gist of my story is the user was totally innocent.

Several years ago I got a call from the operators in our data centre to say they were having a problem with a PC system that was located there - "All of the menu items have disappeared and we need to use it today to make sure overtime payments go into the payroll run!" I had to jump into a taxi to travel the five miles to the data centre, and wait 15 minutes before someone buzzed me in. I walked over to the PC, examined it for about 30 seconds, switched up the brightness on the monitor, then walked out!
