free skype alternatives?

Hello all, I'm using Skype for at least a couple of years. It has worked wonderfully till now, but lately there are plenty of "disconnected" problems, slowness,... and today I've not been able to log in and become connected to their servers and I've finished using Live Messenger. I'd like to know if there is out there any nice competitor to Skype (a better tool would be a nice option). ps: a free tool is what is being searched here... Thank you in advance...
