From Azirona, SAU... Now that fireworks are again legal in Arizona, I'm patrolling the roof looking for embers, and hosing down my plants because it's dropping down to 26°F tonight. Off tomorrow for someplace even colder to enjoy a breakfast of black-eyed peas and a prime rib dinner with my favorite lady... Goodnight all, and best wishes for a prosperous and happy new year. :-D My thanks to all of you for another year of comraderie, friendship, and much learning here at CodeProject. I look forward to as many more as the gods grant to me...:rose:
Will Rogers never met me.

Doesn't hosing down plants encourage frost and kill them off? I grew up in a more-or-less frost-free area, but when I moved to an area where temperatures occasionally dropped below zero overnight, the general consensus was to be careful not to water in late afternoon in case there was frost.

In the case of a hard freeze - well below freezing - a coating of ice prevents the plants from getting much colder than 0°C. It won't save plants that can't tolerate any frost, but it can help those which would normally survive a mild cold snap.

Thanks - I suspect most of the South African plants I was familiar with fell in the "can't tolerate any frost" group. Now in New Zealand, the lowest I expect in Christchurch is about -5 (Centigrade). If plants die, well I won't have to worry about them next year!
