San Diego

Off to see family in San Diego in a few days but will be doing some exploring on our own. Apart from the zoo, Sea World and naval base (?) can anyone recommend anything to see or do in the city (or within a reasonable distance).

Ah, San Diego. Spent four beautiful years there. I'd start with a trolley tour[^] and pick the most interesting places to spend more time on. From the top of my head, I recomend visiting the Old Town[^], Balboa park[^] and the Gaslamp Quarter[^]. Enjoy!

Used to live in San Diego, for 15 years. Sooo... If you're going to the zoo, check out which days what museums are open for free at Balboa Park, I seem to recall that a different museum was free once a week on a different day. There's definitely some cool things in Balboa Park: the rose garden, the science center (see if my exhibit on fractals is still there), the model railroad exhibit, and so forth. Definitely: The Wild Animal Park (I think you can get a discount doing the zoo and WAP together, definitely worth the drive to visit the WAP) go take a walk on the cliffs of Torrey Pines State Park grab some basil pesto and blueberry smoothies at Ki's in Cardiff by the Sea (about 10 minutes north of Torrey Pines) visit Seal Beach in La Jolla (the whole walk along the cliffs in La Jolla is gorgeous, see if the Cave Store still lets you walk down about 300 steps into the cave) walk on the sandy beaches of Coronado Island and have lunch at the famous Coronado Hotel If I were creating an itinerary for you for one day, I would have breakfast at one of the many awesome restaurants overlooking the Pacific in La Jolla (I'd recommend the Brockton Villa), followed by a walk along the cliffs there, then drive up to Cardiff for lunch at Ki's, then head south 10 minutes and spend a couple hours walking around Torrey Pines. You can walk from the top down to the beach, which is beautiful. Check the tides though! Then head south back to La Jolla for a romantic evening dinner at Trattoria Acqua (also highly recommended). That's what I came up with at the moment. Let us know how it goes! Have fun! :) Marc

I've always enjoyed spending time at the Reuben H Fleet Science Center / Space Theatre [^] in Balboa Park (also home to the world's first IMAX Dome Theater)

Not sure if it's your cup of tea or not, but you might want to go see the Whaley house in Old Town. It's listed by the US Department of Commerce as one of the most haunted houses in the US. http://www.whaleyhouse.org/ghostly.htm[^] According to the Travel Channel's America's Most Haunted, the house is the number one most haunted house in the United States

Never been there but I do remember reading about San Diego Computer Museum[^]. Of course whether this is an attractive proposition will depend on many things, your better half for example.

Things to do: Ocean Front Walk Mission Beach, you can rent skates, bikes, surfboards, etc. Cabrillo National Monument, check out the beach along Cabrillo Road if you get the chance. Drive over to Coronado, Nice shops and restaraunts plus the Hotel del Coronado. Visit the Star of India, cool old ship. Visit the Birch Aquarium at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. Visit La Jolla, nice seafront walks, seal beach. LegoLand, it is up by Carlsbad, not too bad of a drive and and it is amazing what they do with Legos. Watch sunset over Pacific.

Their Natural History Museum is pretty neat (it's in Balboa Park), and make sure you check out the Air & Space Museum (also in Balboa Park). I think they also have a classic car museum as well. Oh yeah, make sure you visit the Star of India. It's a square-rigged schooner from the 1800's. Then there's the harbor excursions.

I don't see anything related to fracts on the exhibits page, though the "Gallery of Illusions and Perceptions" may contain something about fractals. Seems like a neat place... will have to visit sometime.

It's not located at hte naval base, but the USS Midway (first post WW2 carrier, transitional between Essex class and the supercarrier template we've used on everything else) is open for tours, and should take up half a day. FYI The exploration path that lead into the engineering spaces (among other things) wasn't fully air conditioned last June, going from ~70F to >90F and horridly humid was a vile transition, especially since my friend I were going somewhere nice for dinner afterwards; dunno if it was a temporary malfunction or if they just haven't retrofitted air conditioning everywhere yet.

I would be surprised. At this point, the machine would be about 25 years old. An 80286 with 80287 co-processor. It was still there about 10 years ago when I visited last. :) Marc

If you like great burgers, fries and shakes, go to Hodads in Ocean Beach. Best in the world. Small little hole in the wall, but man is it awesome. Also, if you like dogs, there are several dog beaches in San Diego where the dogs can play in the water off leash. A really good one in Ocean Beach just down the way from Hodads, and another one right next to the naval base on Coronado. Ah, wish I was there now.....
