Just wondering what tools and bit rate everyone uses when ripping songs from their CD collection? I have recently received a few new albums for my birthday and thought I should probably go about redoing the lot. I'm am not interested in using WMP or WMA so pull your head in David Wulff. I actually just leave everything I rip in WMA format I just mentioned to Michael that you can convert between the formats quite easily. Probably 90% of people would never even hear the difference, I certainly cannot.

WMP 8 + Cyberlink MP3 PowerEncoder - 128 kbps minimum. I have some other software but I don't like it as much. It won't let me name the files the way I like, the automatic song title download never seems to get everything correct, etc. -Sean ---- Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former. -- Albert Einstein. I use MusicMatch Jukebox[^] and I always rip music at 128 kbps. I've compared 128 to higher bit rates and my ears simply can't tell the difference. That, plus the fact that most of the stuff you can download out there is at 128 kbps. Regards, Alvaro

I use Audiograbber (LAME encoder), at 160. I used to use 128, but I could notice a difference in music with crisp highs ( esp. jazz), so I switched. Drive space isn't really an issue anyway. If all background music though, who cares, save the space.. BW "I'm coming with you! I got you fired, it's the least I can do. I use WMP9. I find that the organization of the files is excelent. Although it does take alot of memory. I don't recommend encoding the songs in it though. -Steven

I use AudioCatalyst 2.1 from Xing. I'm sure it's old, but I got it a while back, and it worked, so there was no reason to change (and I will stay away from the evil that is WMP7+ thank you very much ). Golden Rule #1: Nothing less than 128. If you crank the volume up quite a bit (ie: a lot), then 192 is better. I found with 128, a high volumes, the sound gets distorted, whereas with 192, it's not so much. :-D That's why I ramble so much. If you're short and quotable, there's a much greater danger of ending up in a sig. [Christopher Duncan on how to prevent yourself from ending up in a sig]

For ripping the audio, I use Exact Audio Copy[^] which has always served me well, and it supports FreeDB for track info lookups. Any new stuff I encode these days is into Ogg/Vorbis format, to my untrained ears, it seems superior to mp3/wma/etc. If I encode to mp3, I'll use LAME.
