    Jailbreaking

Why the term "jailbreaking"? Is the use of the iPhone akin to being in jail? Too lazy to Google right now. :)

It is regarded as setting it free. Breaking it out of the prison imposed by Apple.

It makes perfect sense to ask here, being the Iphone jailbreak forum and all. ;)

I don't follow you, are you implying that the OP should not post this here? I think a lot of us use iPhones (I do), so it seems perfectly reasonable to ask this question in the Lounge.

Perhaps, but there must be better places to ask a lot of stuff posted in the Lounge. And that's if that person knows those other places (and still they may be more comfortable with this community). We are all technically savvy and one of us is likely to have the answer, so it seems like a fine place to ask. And who in the Lounge doesn't love a reason to bash Apple? ;P

This is a tough one. There are some open source tools to do this, but I'm too lazy to deal with all the details. There are some packages that claim to be easy and foolproof, but there are also claims on many blogs that these are scams. Can't make any sense out of it. If anyone has any suggestions, this is the perfect place to post. We're all techies and into this sort of stuff. I'd like to join the OP to express appreciation to anyone that can help.

Are you joking or messing with the OP? Jailbreaking an iPhone was actually found to be legal. It still can violate your contract, but it's not illegal.

The fact that his method involved stuffing a screw driver into a hole and pushing (vs a software attack) wasn't enough of a hint for you?

Do my homework? There are many posts here asking for advice about gadget purchases, laptops, and so on. Not to mention the ever riveting cricket posts, self-adulation posts, and other assorted rants. What's wrong with asking tech question in the lounge? If you're in a bar (or lounge) having some drinks with friends, does that mean that the only topic of conversation is booze? *sheesh*

It's not the URL that's so long, it's the list of resulting crap that's infinitely long.

BTW - just a quick rundown on unlock and jailbreak... Unlocking an iPhone will only let you use a SIM from another carrier. It won't allow you to run "unauthorized" apps. Jailbreaking an iPhone will let you run "unauthorized" apps, but you'll still be stuck with your carrier. Most people will unlock and jailbreak an iPhone which allows them maximum flexibility from the device that they've purchased. I hope that helps (at least just a little). Now if I could just find an unlock/jailbreak solution that isn't a scam.

Don't bother, the "entitled generation" will just shoot you down from a position of utter ignorance and unshakable belief in things they might have heard from someone somewhere once.

*sheesh*

Utterly different and you know it. In those cases people are asking a group of people who's opinion they respect to give them their OPINION on a subject. They are not asking for basic knowledge that can be found both more easily and more accurately elsewhere. Nice "Straw Man" gambit though! :)

Don't bother, the "entitled generation" will just shoot you down from a position of utter ignorance and unshakable belief in things they might have heard from someone somewhere once.

Are you joking or messing with the OP? Jailbreaking an iPhone was actually found to be legal. It still can violate your contract, but it's not illegal.
