Techno Song
-
Dear Sirs, I just heard a song recently that took my fancy quite a bit. I'm a classically trained Horn player (got my Masters in it), but now I'm a professional Programmer. I normally listen to opera or solo lute or harsichord or whatever, but for some reason, I asked my friend if he had techno, he said yes, and I've been listening to it. The song I found is Face 2 Face by Future Trance United (Sung by Verena Rehm). Have any of you heard of it? I'm trying to figure out why I like it so much. Every year or two, a song comes a long and I get infatuated with it, this song is it now. Does anyone else experience this? Any comments?

Most classically trained horn players live in San Franciso, and yes, many of them have "masters" (or whatever you call your trainer nowadays). How you think that being a professional programmer has any impact on your horn playing or musical proclivities, I cannot guess. I was honestly hoping that Ms Rehm was a skank, but she's not so completely hard on the eyes that I wouldn't hit it myself, so I have to leave that alone (damn the luck). As far as "techno" music, I personally think it's a waste of air movement, and is typically listened to by folks that are easily affected by having too much sugar i their diet. Is your real name Hans or Deiter? lastly, being "infatuated" with something is probably okay, as long as you keep the details to yourself.

I think it's more of an "experience" thing more than a Masters. What form does a thesis take for a Horn Masters? Holding a note for a very long time?

Actually, I recently came across the Drum N Bass Remix for that song by Seba feat. Kirsty Hawkshaw, it is a killer tune.

I do like the occasional hardcore trancy or jungle/d&b stuff. A good thing about techno is you can make a song out of pretty much anything, as long as it is catchy, like Duck Sauce - Barbra Streisand[^]*. My wife absolutely hates that song, so I made it her personalized ringtones ;P * woohoo whoo hoo hoo hoo woohoo whoo hoo hoo hoo woohoo whoo hoo hoo hoo woohoo whoo hoo hoo hoo Barbra Streisand x 8

(disclaimer, I'm an electronic (pretty much all style) music freak) That's euro-dance crap and as much as it's crap, sometimes it works, especially with drunken girls dancing in circle around their handbags. Also, for your enjoyment, have a look at Ishkur's guide to electronic music[^] (work safe, with sound and music) It's a bit outdated and everyone is waiting for version 3, but will probably never happen.

Why were you hoping Ms. Rehm was a skank? So I guess you haven't heard the song. It's available on Youtube...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dto268KcE28[^]

Yes, I just got it back from a prospective purchaser. Would you like to buy it? It's on hornplayer.net[^] (that's my daughter, how cute!!).

What's the difference between Eurodance crap and good electronic music? Is it because it has vocals, a recognizable melody (that is rather long so it can't be repeated 100 times in the song), a standard "song" form (chorus, chorus, bridge, chorus or something) rather than being pure electronic, more focused on large formal design, and small developments of sound?

Music appreciation is not something that is easy to discuss as there are as many good and bad "answers" Euro-Dance is pretty much "formulaic" (have a listen at the di.fm euro-dance channel) and tend to be annoying after a while. I listen to mostly beatless ambient, with some "classic" techno and some "minimal" and "tech-house" techno (electronic music is a bit too much split into a multitude of genres and sub-genres!). As in much of life little pleasures, starting to get interested in a field (in your case electronic music), the pleasure is to discover what you like and dislike and experiment with whatever you can find; and now, there are so many free and legal places to find good tracks and mixes that it is a lot more easier than it was 20 years ago.
