Yes - advertising. They have MILLIONS of users, and can guarantee that each one of those users will see the ads every time they log on. That's better numbers than the advertisers get from TV/radio spots. Let's not forget that FB probably gets revenue every time a user clicks on an ad, too.

"each one of those" → "most" I see very few FB (or any) ads because I use a custom hosts file. /ravi

I deleted mine following these instructions[^] and got an e-mail from Facebook confirming it is deleted (not merely deactivated). Now, I don't really believe them, but that's another story :)

I don't know if this is stupid question but, how does Facebook make money? Is it only from advertising? If it is, i really doubt that. There are only few advertisements on Facebook for them to make that much money! I apologize for my ignorance. I'm sure everyone knows the answer :)

The money comes from a smart advertising model - users voluntarily enter all the information about themselves that any marketer would kill to get hold of, so the ads that are delivered are very targeted. So for example if I "like" Golf, and someone selling golf clubs can target all users who "like" Golf, I'm going to see ads for golf clubs - contrast this with TV ads where it's quite broad spectrum (you might guess that I'll buy shampoo if I watch some chick flick, but thats as good as you get), or Google (which may reasonably guess and place a golf club ad if I look up Tiger Woods latest affair, but I pretty much have to visit the page or discuss it in my GMail) Chris

If you want to see how they make money, look up the cost to buy advertising space. I's per viewer, you buy how many users will see it and can tune it to things listed in their profile interests. I unfortunately have done this before. For example, you can buy 10,000 views from users that list "guns" in their interests.

As in "I was a dummy for creating the account in the first place"?

Yes, I was a big dummy for doing it.

But you can remove all info and replace it with dummy data, right?

                                          Regards, Nish

That's what I did before I deactivated the account...as much of it as I could. My saving grace is that I did not post a lot on the site. I used it to chat with my friends in California.
