    I bought a Pre-Paid USB Mobile Broadband Dongle from Telstra. I haven't had anything to do with Telstra since (I think) December 1997. I need wireless access to support customers when On Call and I'm no where near network connectivity. I desperately wanted to use any provider but Telstra, but providers with good deals have absolute shite coverage and connectivity (ie Vodafone), and Optus (my preferred provider) is just too dear on purchasing Data top ups. So here I am with a Telstra dongle and I just feel so dirty.

        I have two months to go on my Optus mobile account. Never again will I give those lying, cheating baastards another cent of my cash. I've seen ads on telly for Amaysim, I might go with them.

          What have Optus done to you? I've been with them for about 9 years and can't really think of anything specific to complain about. My last renewal was shit, but that was due to the phone I chose, looked all good in the store and when the little sales dude was showing it off. When I got home and actually used it it was the biggest piece of shit on the market. Don't like Samsung phones. <EDIT> 9 years not 90 years, as I originally typed. </EDIT>

            They sold me what they claimed was a home phone / adsl / mobile pack, supplied the mobile then turned around 2 weeks later and said they couldn't provide the home phone or adsl. At that point they claimed the mobile was not part of the same 'deal' as the home phone and adsl so I've been stuck with it for almost two years. Their customer service and dispute resolution is beyond crap. When I got a fancy phone with internet about a year later I found out (the hard way) that this plan I'm stuck on is unbelievably expensive for data. Just looked up the masssive bill - one entry for 3750kb of data cost $51.15!

                    That's too bad. I have two of the Verizon MiFi cards and they both work great, either as a USB dongle or as an independent hot spot. The first one has unlimited access (since I had it before they imposed limits!), the second one only costs $10/month and has 3 GB/month limit. I use the unlimited one here at home and take the 3GB limit with me when go to The University or when I travel. They both work great everywhere in the US, but I imagine they wouldn't work at all down under. Since we're away from home all the time now, I canceled the broadband/cable TV/phone contract and we just use the cell phones and MiFi cards for internet. We haven't missed the TV at all yet. Those little MiFi things are nice. I sure hope you get a good deal from Telstra and that it actually works well.

                      You say you don't like dealing with Telstra (and I agree) yet they provide the widest coverage so you've gone with them (so have I). Fair enough, however then you state that Optus and Vodaphone have the best deals but lousy coverage (all too true). To me, this is the nub of the problem with deregulated Telecommunications in a sparsly populated Oz. With such a large land mass and with low but concentrated population centres, providing network coverage everywhere is expensive so the Telco's like Optus and Vodaphone pick the eyes out of the market, leaving the more regulated Telstra to foot the bill for a greater coverage via higher fees to their customers. I believe we really should have one, really excellent, well provided network. Instead of ugly phone towers on top of everything from tall buildings to fruit shops! With the one network provider wholesaling to the various Telco's at a regulated and fair price. The current situation is a farce, especially if you just happen to be one of the poor sods whose house is alongside yet another phone tower.

And since we need at least the 2 cell phones and 1 MiFi anyway, the incremental cost is cheaper to add the extra cell and the extra MiFi than it is to get an AT&T line and DSL. Once I finish up here and move back home, I'll consider getting the hard wired service back, just for speed.

                                      With a single dumbphone on the minimum voice plan and without even a texting plan, I doubt I'd be able to get much out of VZW in terms of extra discount. And at present cutting the landline isn't an option for me at all. I'm probably going to upgrade my cable from 5 to 7.5MB down to stream 720p youtube (currently I need to let it buffer most of the way first), and an evening of even low res video is a few hundred MB of data. That's not the show stopper though. Outlook is using ~2GB down/day. I have a large gmail/imap account and an NNTP feed (3rd party plugin); both of them consume several MB each time I do a manual update; however changing them from syncing every 5 minutes to every 10 didn't affect my hourly data rate at all. :confused: I've expended more effort than I expected I would in tracking this down already; and as long as my ISP doesn't make an issue don't intend to look farther; but wireless data is a non-starter under that sort of load.
