Convert DVD to mp4 or something?

Does anyone have any recommendations for what and how to convert DVD's to something more storable and playable on an iPhone or other devices? I like paying for good software, so free or not, doesn't worry me. The family and I are pulling roots and going off to Vancouver for a year or two, and the lady of the house wanted to take her rather large collection of DVDs. Me, being an excellent provider of advice she doesn't necessarily want, suggested we just convert them to something the iPhone or iPod can play instead. Surprisingly, she went for it. So yay, chalk one up for the technosolver. Googling for it yielded the usual mixture of free and paid for solutions some of which I'm not sure how to figure out if it is reputable or not.

You can try http://www.oxelon.com/media_converter.html[^]. It is freeware and uses ffmpeg for the media conversion. Well the webpage is crappy but software is good and it comes with source so there are no issues of malware. http://sourceforge.net/projects/oxelonmediaconv/files/[^]. http://code.google.com/p/oxelon-media-converter/[^]. There are couple of annoying things about it, like it opens a webpare everytime you close the software. So I just rebuilt the software from source. It builds fine out of the box with visual studio. -Saurabh

Forgot to mention there is also http://www.pazera-software.com/products/zune-video-converter/[^]. It also works very well and I have used it a lot for converting videos for my phone. It also uses ffmpeg for converting vidoes. Actually ffmpeg is the defacto standard software for converting video for most of the softwares out there. If you want to go thought the huge number of command line arguments it provides to find the one for you need then you can just write a script to convert all videos you have. -Saurabh

I almost don't want to recommend the software (the developers are not responsive to user suggestions) but DVDFab will do it. It will remove all of the crap that comes on a DVD and just rip the movie. I'll leave it to you to find it with google.

Thanks for the info Dave. I gave it a go straight away, but unfortunately it failed on the first DVD I tried, get some sort of read errors scanning the disk? Oh well, onto the next one!

I almost don't want to recommend the software (the developers are not responsive to user suggestions) but DVDFab will do it. It will remove all of the crap that comes on a DVD and just rip the movie. I'll leave it to you to find it with google.

If you're targeting the iPod, I recommend using DVDShrink[^] to rip your DVDs (main movies only) to
.isoimage files and Handbrake[^] to convert the.isoto an iPod ready.mp4. I've done this with great success. You could also skip the.mp4conversion and just store the.isomovie files on an external hard disk (or two, depending on the quantity and size of your movies) and use a WD TV Live[^] to play them thru any TV.
