Hi, Just had apraisals (annual review). Hate to say but when I considered that when I performed very well I was declared only good and poor dot net coder, probably due to some failure in the recent task assigned this month. When asked about it did not get proper answer from my boss. Should have left the company when the downturn started due to recession. They plan to execute every project now on , on the deadline declared at any cost. Dont know what happens if any missed. So quiet anxious, confused, frustrated, discouraged and helpless. Guys any supporting words to boost my morale? Thanks Meena kumar

what will you do if your morale is boosted? Will it help you? Your past messages in CP are not encouraging?

Maybe I am being cynical but is this a way to avoid pay rises?

More probably a way to avoid paying severance packages for any layoffs. It's a common tactic when the company knows in advance there will be a layoff in the next half year or so. Folks are given poor reviews and then are terminated for cause, which obviates the company from paying the severance package that a layoff would require. Companies also know that most [former] employees are too busy scrambling to find a new job to challenge it in court after such an occurrence. It's difficult to prove this is the case, since the company usually holds all of the documentation. There's also a disincentive to challenge this, since your future employers will shy away from someone who takes their employer to court. Of course, I'm paranoid in the 'current economic climate', given that I'm almost 50 years old and at the top of the salary range.

I was given a review that said I performed at 120% (whatever that means) during my first 6 months at my company, but was given no raise or promotion. People hired last year are not up for raises yet, per upper management's orders. That somewhat annoys me, since I didn't find out about that until after others were given raises (and during my interview when I asked about raises, I was told "the company rewards good performance", but the little bit about pay freezes was left out). Add that to the fact that I was lied to during my interview (I was told I needed 8 years of .Net experience to be a Web Developer III, but a document I got during my review said I only need 5 years of developer experience, which I already had). Anyway, my company has alternative ways of compensating employees (e.g., benefits, free gym, and we now have a ping pong table). Though those will not satisfy employees forever, so hopefully the company starts performing better so we can all get the raises and promotions we deserve. Sounds like your company is doing you no favors. I say start looking for a better job.

Did you consider that if you know you failed in a recent task, perhaps the review was full of helpful advice you could act on instead of making excuses ?

At a previous job, a coworker was given a few low scores (say, 6 out of 10) in certain areas (e.g., reasoning ability). When he challenged that by bringing it up with HR, his boss (who was also my boss) changed the scores (10 out of 10). I remember him giving me some low scores too, but that company was nonsense anyway (e.g., I was underpaid and didn't get a raise for 2 years, and was told a raise was not likely to happen unless I threaten to quit) so I just found a better company to work for.

I'm just exploring another possibility, we plainly are getting his side, and it reads off to me. But, I am not claiming to know for sure.

I am sorry, I don't have any encouraging words to boost your morale. I do however have some advice. A very similar thing happened to me last year. I wonder if you are one of the people that I used to work with :omg: ... Advice: 1) You will never truely know what your boss are thinking or planning. Trying to figure it out will drive you insane. 2) Think about what is best for your well being, keep your temper and emotions in check. 3) Ask this exact question: "I want to improve on my review for next year. What will success look like to you?" Take notes and get them to elaborate. You may get BS answers, you may get something useful. However I think its something you definitely should do. 4) Start looking for a new job, and wait for something better. As long as you have a job, you are in no hurry to take the first thing that pops up. If it takes a while to find the opportunities, you still are working. If layoffs occur, you already have a head start on your search. Good Luck, And know there are better places to work, and you CAN get one of those jobs if you want it.

I had a similar situation once and was pretty angry. I asked my boss for weekly meetings, every monday we sat down and I told him in massive amounts of detail every single thing I had done the previous week. I would then send him an email with the same list and ask him to respond saying if it was adequate. I then printed out all his 'yes you've done well this week' emails and took them to my next review. I never got another bad review from him.
