It's done...

My transition was finally announced at work at midday today. The Engineering Director briefed the Engineers, whilst the MD's PA Lisa talked to all the girls individually. The rest of the company received an email statement: Last year Andy Metcalfe was diagnosed with a birth defect called Gender Dysphoria (also known as Gender Identity Disorder or Transsexualism), which causes sufferers to have an internal gender identity which is at odds with their physical appearance. It is now recognised that psychological treatments are ineffective on this condition (there’s no “cure”), and therefore the accepted treatment is transition to the inner gender of the sufferer, using hormone therapy and other medical treatments. Andy has been receiving such treatment since earlier this year. With effect from 1st January 2003, Andy will be legally known as Anna-Jayne Metcalfe and will be treated as a female member of staff. The Company has willingly offered its full support in this difficult situation and expects all members of staff to be similarly supportive and understanding. Please remember that despite the obvious differences in appearance, Anna and Andy are the same person. If you have any questions on this matter then please refer them to your Departmental Director. Andy/Anna is quite happy to discuss the condition and the issues which arise from it with anyone interested. So far, the reaction has been extremely positive, and I'm looking forward to putting the old me behind me after Christmas. :) Another hurdle bites the dust. :-D Anna :rose: www.annasplace.me.uk "Be yourself - not what others think you should be"

- Marcia GraeschGood Luck. I'm curious about how your direct family members (mother, father, siblings) reacted when you told them. I would expect that to have been potentially much worse than co-workers. Mike Mullikin

- Marcia GraeschWow! That's an amazingly supportive workplace you have there. The managers, at least. What has the reaction from your colleagues been? It's gotta be weird for them :-) I'm curious, though - what are the legal ramifications of what you are doing? There must surely be a whole bunch of paperwork you have to do to formally change your gender?
