WikiLeaks: al-Qaeda 'is planning a dirty bomb'[^]. How worried should we be? If it was a straight story I'd lend it more credence but it is second hand via WikiLeaks: not sure quite how reliable that would be. Of course, you can't discount that they probably will try something like this: perhaps it's time to stock up on beans and work from home!

You know, I'm normally of the opinion that the government is totally incompetent, but this much be a little much. How many times has Al Qaeda successfully attacked us? Once. Well, four times, if you count the planes separately. How many times have they TRIED to attack us? I don't know... We hear reports of failed attempts, now and then, but those seem to be more like 3-4 per year... Seems a bit low for what's touted as such a high-profile terrorist group, doesn't it? Obviously I have no evidence to back this up, but I suspect that there are a lot more attacks being attempted and stopped by the CIA, NSA, and their counterparts among our allies. As for 9/11... Did they ignore intel? Maybe... Was it total incompetence, or was it one mistake/oversight among many more successes? Remember... The bad guys only have to succeed once... Our guys have to succeed every single time. And remember that the army and the intelligence services are different parts of the government. Just because the Dubya-in-chief sent the army to Vietn--err, Iraq... Doesn't mean the CIA is wasting time there too.

Thanks for the refresher course. ;P I don't work for the CIA and of course I don't have irrefutable proof that they are doing nothing with the intel they have but it does make me wonder though what the hell they are doing and what they are not doing. My fellow soldiers and I always have felt that we were doing the wrong things and going on the wrong missions...hitting the wrong targets. We should have been going straight (with a common sense purpose and approach) instead we were going in circles, in reverse, at a fast clip at that. I have never believed that my Government is incompetent. Figure heads such as the President or V.P. may be but not the Government in a whole. -- just my thoughts on the subject. sorry to sound preachy.

It does kind of seem like that. I can't claim any military experience, but I do get the impression that our military often gets sent to the wrong places at the wrong times. Makes me wonder whether it's just stupidity/politics in Washington or part of some bigger strategy... Misdirection, maybe... Swing the broadsword over here, while the stiletto hits home over there...

It's easy! Steal some radioactive waste from a poorly defended power plant. Fill a crate with it. Stick explosive around the crate and light the fuse. The only surprising thing is that it hasn't been done yet. Maybe they're waiting for a really windy day...

It's far easier to build a "dirty bomb" than building a real nuke. The low concentration radioactive material is much easier to obtain and std explosives would work fine in spreading it over a large area. Explode one in a major metro area and it could be almost as effective in creating large areas that would be unusable for years and mass radioactive casualties. Only question is why hasn’t it happened yet? Is it incompetence on the part of terrorist or very competent intelligence agencies?
