www.walkscore.com[^] This is a pretty interesting use of google map data, the web site gives an address a score out of 100 rating how many services are available in walking distance. My current address in Sydney gets 98 and it's an awesome place to live, we hardly use our car, shame we had to sell :( My previous address in Amsterdam got a perfect 100.

Did you look at what it actually suggested for shop/park/etc etc? It gives me a score of 40, with the following (let's be VERY polite) surprises: "Car dependent" - doesn't know the bus route in the next street. It's less than 1km to the railway station anyway... Distances are all mostly screwed. One shown as 700m is about right; another in the same category is shown as 460m when it's really about 1.3km. Shop data is seriously out of date or worse. There are some listed that have not existed in the nine years I've been here. Plenty that do exist are not shown. Parks - it lists one 1.3km away, totally ignoring two at 100m and 600m. Pubs - gets the first two right, then an unlicenced premises, then a random selection of out-of-town ones, including one I've never heard of, 34.45km away. There must be at least a dozen closer than that. It might do OK in "major cities", but as Christian also found, scores a big FAIL elsewhere. Cheers, Peter

92 in (mid-town) Toronto.  My transit score was 93 ("Rider's Paradise - World-class public transportation"), which is a shame since I choose to drive to work instead of taking the subway and bus. :( /ravi

It was pretty accurate for my location. Looks to me like the data comes largely from google maps outside of the US cities which seem to have more data about pulic transport etc

42 for me which isn't bad for Southern California ... but it also says if I want to walk to work, it will take me 3:45 while driving is just 20 minutes

Most US cities/towns would score low except those addresses that are right in the middle of downtown.

Don't like the bus? I liked the subway but hated the bus, and thus drove to work when I lived there too. Ironically we paid extra rent so we could live at walking distance to a subway station. :-)

If you sold it, how come it's still your current address? Unless you sold it to your new landlord.

We sold it on the condition the purchser rent it back to us for two months while we look for something else. It's a very wierd feeling to pay rent for a house you're used to owning :)

We've found one already, just waiting for the transaction to settle.

Ah yes, a 98 score does indicate something near or in the middle of downtown, and I wouldn't expect that to indicate a big house :-) The twins are your 2nd (and 3rd) kids, right? You have an older daughter? (vague memory). And the twins are girls too? If so you'll basically be living in a sorority house for the next 16 years, outnumbered 4 to 1 :-)

                                      Regards, Nish

It's about 5kms from the centre. There are lots of bigger houses in the area but out of our price range.

Almost right, we have a 2.5 year old son and the twins are both boys. Their mother wants a female dog to attempt to balance things out a bit :)
