www.walkscore.com[^] This is a pretty interesting use of google map data, the web site gives an address a score out of 100 rating how many services are available in walking distance. My current address in Sydney gets 98 and it's an awesome place to live, we hardly use our car, shame we had to sell :( My previous address in Amsterdam got a perfect 100.

Very strange. One end of my street scores 98, the other end 80. The street is only 200 metres long.

   Interesting, and so bad... The nearest park is in another state, 20 miles away unless I want to walk across the Colorado River, in which case it's only 2.49 miles. It only lists one bar - a gay bar - though there are two or three closer, and much more to my tastes. The only restaurant listed is a filthy drive up that serves Mexican food you can smell for blocks because they never change the cooking lard or wash anything. There are at least 6 decent restaurants the same distance from my house. The entertainment listed is Don's Kids' Kastle, which is a baby-sitting service located in another state, 15 miles away, inside a casino; the map shows it two blocks from my house in a residential neighborhood. Not nearly ready for prime time... I won't be using it to locate fun thing to do when I'm travelling.:suss:

The things I dislike about a lot of the north west of Sydney is there are no paved pavements to walk on. You have road, grass and peoples front fence. Perhaps that has some effect. We're in Leichhardt, when I generate the map you cant see the roads for the 100's of little icons.

Beetsterzwaag gets 52, but they somehow overlooked the bleeding great supermarket that's smack in the middle of the town (they had the nearest as being 56km away). I've added it, and I'm waiting eagerly for the score to go up to at least 53!

Belay that. They wouldn't let me add it unless I signed in with facebook , so I'm stuck with a score of 52 :sigh: :(( .

Don't like the bus? I liked the subway but hated the bus, and thus drove to work when I lived there too. Ironically we paid extra rent so we could live at walking distance to a subway station. :-)

The problem with the bus is that it makes it difficult to work late @ the office during inclement weather. The subway's right opposite my home and I'm pretty sure I'd use it regularly if there was a stop within walking distance of work. /ravi

Me and pretty much everyone else here expected that you'll get DIVIDE BY ZERO EXCEPTION, so just a ZERO is actually a great thing in your case.

I'm living near a big town, on the land, and according to the map, I would have to go to town to find ... a park, 15 miles away, which brings me to a total of 48. Sure. On the other side, when you have plenty of fields and forest a few minutes walk away, why would I walk in town to find a park ...
