I think the organizers are trying to over-sensationalize the event. I mean, it's the freakin Super Bowl - you don't need to spend a million dolars to get someone famous to sing the National Anthem. What they should start doing is holding local auditions and using local talent for the job. THAT would be more interesting to me. Screw the big name "artists". I don't want artisitic - I want it done right.

Jim Cornelison is my favorite singer, and the tradition of Blackhawk fans is great. Everyone should come to Chicago for a hockey game just to mark it off their bucket list. If you are unaware of the tradition, fans go bat apesh*t during the anthem, usually making it the loudest point during any game (122Db). During the playoffs last year my ears rang after the song every time. http://blackhawks.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=531107[^] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_nQ-GNdo3E[^]

Because Christina Aguilera butchered the national Anthem on Sunday, people are starting to suggest that we should change the anthem to be America the Beautiful because the Star Spangled Banner is "too hard to sing", the lyrics are "biligerent", and the tune itself is based on an English drinking song. Hard to sing, meaning the words are too complicated, or are difficult to remember? The lyrics are "biligerent"? Damn skippy the lyrics are biligerent.

From what I hear/read persons signing the national anthem are offered a card with the lyrics. Most of the flubbers pass on the card and try to sing/wing it. Read the darn card. It isn't hard. Oh, and, um, practice. This goes equally well for Presidents making first pitches.

I can't sing a lick but I don't claim to be a singer. The only money I could make at singing would be from people wanting to shut me up. :)

Yeah, she screwed up the line at probably the worst possible time. If she was singing a song that *wasn't* the national anthem, it could have been explained away as ad-libbing, or artistic freedom, but she screwed up the National Anthem. Most Americans won't forgive that. Look at others who've screwed up that song - Rosanne Barr, Macie Gray - their careers effectively went down the dumper when they screwed up the song.

Agreed - Changing the lyrics or changing the song because it's "hard to sing" is plain stupid. That said, I don't think she "butchered" the song. Her "stylized" version sounded great to my ears (she has a powerful voice) - she simply flubbed a line. No big deal... People are making WAY more out of this than it deserves.

Says the man who has never made even a small mistake on an important project? I call bullshit! The idea behind the anthem is the important thing not the perfect execution of each lyric every time. I'll bet 99% of the people watching didn't even know about it until they saw it in the press.

OK? :~ I was raised to respect the national anthem and the ideas it represents. Be quiet, remove your hat, look at a flag if one is around and show a little respect to those that have sacrificed for our country.

Nope - all the mistakes I make are f*ckin' huge, but my mistakes don't have anything to do with the National Anthem, either. I didn't watch the game (I don't personally give a rat's ass about any professional sport), so I didn't see/hear it until I "saw it in the press" (when I finally heard it, I immediately heard the mistake). I'm just saying that flubbing that particular song does nothing positive for the flubber's career. I don't really care how many people noticed it (or didn't). There's really no excuse for screwing it up - she had plenty of time to practice, and was offered a card with the lyrics on it. I don't actually care about her screwing up the song because it happens so many times. My comment was about how absurd it is to suggest changing the anthem from The Star Spangled Banner to America The Beautiful as a fix for the problem.

She's not the first to butcher it and probably won't be the last. It just means that the people who decide who is going to sing it, should take greater care in choosing whom they select. The woman who sings the anthem before each Philadelphia Flyer's hockey game would have been a much better choice. :)

The guy who sings it for Ohio River Road Runners Club[^] races would be a great choice. I've heard him sing The Star Spangled Banner several times, outdoors, in weather ranging from 70°F and sunny to 18°F and snowing. He nails it every time. You know someone can sing the national anthem when they delay the start of the race because people are still cheering.

OK? :~ I was raised to respect the national anthem and the ideas it represents. Be quiet, remove your hat, look at a flag if one is around and show a little respect to those that have sacrificed for our country.

In the words of George Carlin, "I consider them symbols, and I leave symbols to the symbol-minded." It's entirely possible to respect the ideas behind the anthem, without caring enough to listen to the horrible pop singer butchering the song that represents them.

You obviously made your mind up before she sang the first note - let alone flubbed the one line.

Obviously. All pop singers butcher it... Some worse than others. That's why they get paid so much.

Not the first time they've crawled out from under their rock; probably won't be the last time since no one ever gets around to encasing it and the surrounding area in concrete while they're underneath it. :sigh:
