Do people search any more?
-
I notice that there are a lot of similar questions on this (Q & A) and other sites that a simple search would turn up an answer or at least a direction. One site I frequent seems to have the same five questions (restated) over and over. Granted Google will give you junk for the first several answers but come on, am I expecting too much from people? Do not get me started on Google not giving you the answer right away. I search for a company name and even though the name is in the URL Google puts it on page two...

If you had searched, you would see that this topic has been discussed many times before... ;P Nah, just kidding!

Actually it has. I just needed to vent.

Do people search any more? Seldom, it's easier to ask someone to tell you the answer than to research yourself. Research is a skill that like anything else takes practice and patience not many people are willing to invest.

This is an especially bad problem here in the Q/A section. I would bet that at least 80% of all the questions posted could be answered with a simple google search.

If the persons are eager to learn from their own they will use the google otherwise there are lot of persons in forum just putting their task and waiting for the reply from our cp experts. I don't like this since whenever we are free we are helping them eventhough when we are busy. First the guys has to think of their own and if they could not they should post.

For some reason, they seem to think it is quicker to post a question here than use Google. When possible I point this out, particularly when I used their question subject as the search term... I do feel there is a "spoon-feed-me" attitude amongst a (largish) number of questioners. What annoys me is when they then delete the question to stop anyone else getting the same answer.

Exactly. IMHO there are very few questions that need to be asked. The internet is such a wonderful research tool that you can find almost anything you are looking for if you just take the time.

AFAICT there is only one remedy: not to answer the question when it does not show any sign of effort already spent. Unfortunately some people seem unable to restrain themselves and provide an answer anyway... Same goes for lack of readability in the question (as in: no PRE tags...). :)

Please use <PRE> tags for code snippets, they preserve indentation, improve readability, and make me actually look at the code.

It's called lazy.

We are enabling them and they will continue as long as we do.

Not using the PRE tag is something that gets me also.

I answered a question this morning about faxing. I provided the guy with TWO search strings that came back with more than half a million results (combined), and he STILL didn't want to use google.
