Nah don't feel that way. I agree that digital books have come to take over these days but you still have everybody buying books/magazines because they are meant to be read in their original form: the smell of new paper and you know. :D That's actually better than straining the eyes on screens which emit radiation. :)

I don't use Internet Explorer, Outlook, Download Pnography, or Binaries from the Internet not participate in social networking sites. I have been perfectly satisfied with scanning the few files I download with a scanner and running the malicious software removal tool.

Most of the times my PC has been attacked by trojans/viruses coming from USB drives of friends who claim with confidence that they have never seen a virus in their PC at all. :sigh:

A friend suggested McAfee and some other name which I forgot. Which ones do you people use? I'm open to suggestions. Suggestions: Kaspersky 2011(mine), Trend Micro, NOD32 and Microsoft Security Essentials as of now. Thank You!

Our company used Trend Micro for a few years so I used it on my home machines as well. But we had 2 instances of it failing to update & fixing it took literally days, having to strip out every scrap of it from the Registry, etc. before fixing it. They have now moved onto Sophos which appears to be even worse - it has centralised monitoring & every time I look at the monitor I see half the machines are not updated & the rest have 1 or more problems. I am just using Microsoft Security Essentials on 3 machines at home. Caught a few attacks and had minimal problems so far. It will do me.

MSE is free. For small businesses (up to 10 PCs) it is still free (which is almost better than free). Sure it is not perfect, nor is any other, but IMHO there is nothing less intrusive and more reliable. Hell yes.

I have a similar dilemma, I have a paid for license for AVG but have been getting annoyed with how the newer versions are resource hogs, that said my machine is geriatric (XP, single 2.5GHz core, 1GB RAM) so I may simply be being unrealistic. McAfee is in my experience the worse resource hog of all, I had it at work for years because we got it free via a site licence. We now pay for the excellent Sophos, but that is not available for personal use. PCs are about twice the speed as a result. People I work with are recommending Norton, which is interesting given other comments here. I had it in 2002 or so, but abandoned it for AVG when the one time I had a virus it was not detected, and I felt the support people were spinning me a story rather than taking my report seriously.

I was using the free version of AVG for years and never had a problem. I did find out recently that my cable company provides three free licenses for McAfee full version, so I installed it on my two home PCs and I love it. (If it's free, it's for me :) )

I use a combination of MSE + Comodo Firewall and its great so far.

I have seen many as I have worked on/setup/built computers of relatives/friends/coworkers. The one I use that is by far the least intrusive is ESET's NOD32. Great product. NUZZI

Sounds like you've had too much of it. :-D The only time I used Norton was way back in 2000 and 2002. Installing was a pain, scanning was a pain, updating was a pain and uninstalling it was a breeze. Only thing in which they succeeded in proper implementation. :sigh:

In 2003, they fixed that, and uninstallation became a nightmare, as well: lots of registry references left behind, didn't uninstall the updater (which then kept attempting to update software which was no longer installed), etc ...

I would vote for either AVG free(free yet stellar) or NOD32(not free but still stellar) both outperform* all the "popular" anitviruses such as Norton and MacAfee. Neither will bog down your system I've used both and can attest to that. *I saw this in an article that went over a whole bunch of antiviruses to see which ones caught viruses fastest(which is most important to me in the long run)

I'm surprised Comodo Internet Security isn't more popular here. Non-techies are confused by its notifications whenever anything potentially suspicious happens on the computer, but I love knowing whenever a program tries to connect to the internet, modify the registry, install hooks, write an executable file, etc. There's really no intrinsic difference between a virus and a legitimate program in terms of what types of things they do. The only virus solutions that work are to run in an environment with only authorised programs (iPhone) or to have the user authorise every important action taken on a machine.

NOD32! Non intrusive (doesn't give you useless popups). Catches everything without any user interaction. Good gaming performance while running nod32 even on an intel centrino duo 1.66GHz with 2GB ram, ati x1400 (Counter Strike Source)

Forgot to mention, it uses ~25 MB in memory, which is less than any other AV program and seems to use less cpu cycles than any other for real time protection.
