i got a flood of updates from twitter. some good ones. http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/02/microsoft-and-nokia-team-up-to-build-windows-phones/[^] personally, i am not a huge nokia fan. but at least it is a sign of life? edit: ah ha! got it. getting a cup of coffee now. first one of the day :zzz:

This is a good thing. It will be good to get a decent phone manufacturer like Nokia bringing out WP7 capable phones. I bet they'll be way better than HTC and Samsung.

This is a good thing. It will be good to get a decent phone manufacturer like Nokia bringing out WP7 capable phones. I bet they'll be way better than HTC and Samsung.

While I agree that it's a very smart move by both sides, I've yet to really find a fault with my HTC HD7. Any problems I've had, and they're few, seem to be to be software related.

Well I picked the Samsung Focus over the HTC Surround (based on multiple user reviews), and I don't think Samsung's done a great job (I am not the only one with phone troubles with that model). Most of my Nokia experiences in the past have been excellent. So historically speaking, I think Nokia would probably do a very good job.

hopefully this will allow them to focus more on making more stable handsets like they used to! As there current handset quality was poor and helped me make a poor decision of getting a i"crap"phone

There's an article on El Reg about this too. From that article it seems to say that Nokia is dropping it's R&D, and will simply adopt Windows mobile. So Symbian just fades away. Also it seemed to imply that Qt was going to die off as well. Seems like depressing news.

I worked for Nokia recently and they have nothing in the same league as my HTC Desire. The N8 is OK (apart from the terrible software of course), is has a really good camera, but the overall build quality isn't great IMHO. If Nokia don't get something good out very quickly then it's all over. I am very pessimistic about this 'alliance' and I think MS could end up buying Nokia in a few years, once the share price hits rock bottom. I can't see Nokia changing overnight and they need to... making people wait a year for their first WM7 phone will be too long. I feel sorry for the great devs I worked with at Nokia who are now in fear of losing their jobs.

The (L)GPL version of Qt will be forked within days - KDE depends on it as do plenty of other applications. In an ideal world Google would make Nokia an offer for Qt and set an Android port rolling. :) Qt is more about just phones thankfully. But anyone working for Nokia R&D should be dusting off their CV.

Yep, I'm not surprised at that. However weren't nokia funding Qt? If it's not funded anymore, then all of the guys who previously had full time jobs working on are going to stop. I would expect that to hugely slow any further development of the library beyond just bug fixes.

Other open-source projects survive so we'll see, either that or someone else will come along and snap it up. Qt was already pretty mature before Nokia came along as they made money from licenses, so maybe it will head in that direction again. Too early to tell but I will watching closely as we use Qt for a few projects and I love working with it.
