Noise cancelling headphones recommendation
-
Can someone recommend me good noise cancelling headphones - that works well in a cubicle environment. Occasionally, I have to got to a client location and the sound in the cubicles is extremely distracting. Any recommendations?

How much are you willing to spend? I have some headphones that almost work as earmuffs if you wear them while not playing music! They may be a bit overkill in your case though, they're a bit expensive. It's the Pioneer HDJ-1000[^] I'm sure there's a lot of cheaper alternatives, but I really recommend the Pioneers, they are really good! But if you're only intending to use them for VOIP calls and that kind of stuff, that might be a bit overkill :)

You can actually make these yourself for very cheap. You will need:
- Headphones
- Phillips Screwdriver
Place he headphones on the table. Insert the screwdriver into your left ear and turn clockwise. Repeat for your right ear. Put the headphones on and walk near some traffic. You should hear nothing. Finally, throw the headphones away... you won't be needing them.

I had thought about some AKG 701s, they are £200 and not noise cancelling. What about sound quality though? I am more interested in rock etc. and want a clear, even sound.

Well, to be honest, I'm not a sound expert, so I'm not able to give a "detailed" description of the sound quality :) But I would say those headphones work well for most types of music, with a really nice bass and clear sound - I listen to a lot of different music, including rock and heavy metal, and they sound great no matter what you're listening to.

The most effective form of noise-cancellation is a well placed .45 ACP bullet right between the eyes.

I am wearing the Sony MDR-NC60 as we speak. Awesome.

I am surprised that Sony is not in your boycott list.

I have auto-run disabled on my CD/DVD drive. To be honest, I have their original MP3 player with a real HDD and it is pretty darn decent. The headset I am wearing is beyond comfortable and came with a lot of accessories for much less than a bose.

I've been using the Sony model MDR-NC6 for several years and find them very good for mechanical noise (air conditioning, jet engines), almost completely eliminating them, but they only muffle voices so they are of limited value in a situation with "loud talkers" next door. The sound quality is good and they cost about $100 which is in the mid range. Good review here: http://reviews.cnet.com/headphones/sony-mdr-nc6/4505-7877\_7-31128763.html I do not have any experience with other models though it seems that there are better (maybe more expensive - I have seen $300) and some that are as low as $20. The Bose noise cancelling headphone seems highly regarded.

I believe JSOP gets good results with the earlier model, the AK-47.
