Has anyone here successfully downloades and installed linux using red hat's ISO images? If so, how did you burn them onto a CD... my CD burning software, Aheads Nero, gave me some strange options box while trying "to import foreign image file". I have no idea what these are or how to use them. I managed to pull down both images... which I may add are huge....(thank god for cable) but can't get this to work right. This is becoming more trouble than its worth... Experiences, suggestions and comiserations welcome. I have done the same thing with Corel's version of Linux. And I had the same trouble with Nero. So I will look forward to an answer. I can't believe you actually downloaded it, I tried for two or three weeks unsuccessfully to download it at work. We have a couple of T1s. When I did finally connect to a site, it only downloaded around 3 or 4 kbs. And it would always time out eventually anyway. My solution was to go out and buy it, it's only $29. Wayne

I've downloaded some ISO's and burned them onto CDs with Nero. It's actually not hard once you know how to do it. File menu->Burn Image. Change the 'Files of Type' to all files, select your .iso file. A dialog with some confusing option will pop up. I forget what it looks like and I don't have an iso to try it out with, but I think there's an option for blocksize. I don't remember which setting I used (sorry). I was worried that it wouldn't work, but it did. I've tried several distros of Linux and I like the command line interface, but I can't seem to get the X Server configured to work with my funky ATI All-in-wonder 128 card so I got frustrated and gave up. I had some problems to configure my Xserver too. I think the version 4 it's a little bit more hard to set. But I have to say something: one you do it install the KDE version 2 it has nice applications including KDE Office and Kdevelop that are worth it. By the way I used the Adaptec software to burn my CD's without any problem. []s Crercio

If xconfigurator works, and you have the latest drivers installed for your card, then startx --bpp 32 should work. Either that or change to runlevel 5 (graphical) by using telinit 5 as root Anyway, I have limited knowledge of lunix, just that's how I got x to work with my geforce before there was native support for it.... Hope it helps a little! :-) regards Liam O'Hagan Senior Test Engineer GLI Australia www.gli.com.au

Yes, I have. First get the MD5SUM.EXE program to check the integrity of the ISO files before burning them. Leave the options in Nero's dialog to their defult values.

The FTP site ftp.linuxberg.com is a very good site. They limit the bandwidth to 50K/s but you can use FTP clients like CuteFTP Pro that support multi-part downloads to create 2 connections and effectively double the bandwidth. This site has all the major Linux ISO CD images. Everytime that I have connected I have been able to consistently download at the maximum bandwidth that the site allows.

I don't get this at all. I'm sure your time is worth more than the cost of purchasing the CD. I bought a Linux book that came with a RedHat 5.0 CD. Certainly cheaper for me to buy the book than waste my tie downloading and burning a CD, when I could be coding for my company.
