For the past 11 years, I've always purchased my phones from the local AT&T store. To date, this has been a painless process. I sign a contract, get a free phone, and go about my business. I'm curious, what would be the difference in purchasing a phone from, say, Amazon or eBay? I'm assuming a contract would still be required. Would I need to take the phone to a local AT&T store for anything? Would my address book be transferable from the old phone to the new? Does Amazon or eBay communicate with AT&T to get this all set up or would I do that? Thanks. - DC

Just get your phone from AT&T again, and make it easy on yourself.

Dave, I'm with AT&T and I have never used their local store. I bought phones (with contract extensions) from Wirefly, bought phone from AT&T web store. My understanding is that even if you go through 3rd parties it'd be the same as buying from your local store. I never had any problems with upgrading phones, buying new ones or extending the contract using 3rd party. But never dealt with Amazon or eBay with regard to my wireless phone.

        Yusuf May I help you?

As long as you have the Sim chip you have always used, you just have to buy an AT&T compatible phone.

          :)

Not sure about AT&T but my brother works for Verizon and they will not "Support" your independent phones. In fact, he said they will not support it even if bought from Kiosks in the malls as they are not actually Verizon venders. Now support is a loose term, but it basically means if you come in with issues and they determine from account info that your phone was not bought from a retailer they will give you the quick, "You will need a new phone sir" versus spending any time on you since they did not make money off you nor will they... unless you buy a phone. Not saying you need the support. Just know they a sales guy will probably not help you if you do need it. It would be like going into H&R Block and trying to get an accountant to help you will your printing out docs from the software. Or getting a vendor to support a refirbished product.. Or expecting an author to willingly sign your copy of their book that has a clearly marked "USED" sticker on it. $0.02

Computers have been intelligent for a long time now. It just so happens that the program writers are about as effective as a room full of monkeys trying to crank out a copy of Hamlet.
