Sunlight Melting a Rock

I couldn't watch this video with the sound on (too quiet in my office to try that without getting caught and no headphones) but it was kind of cool even on mute: Melting a Rock with Sunlight[^]
I've always wanted to see that!

You don't need the sound, the presenter has an irritating voice.

It is pretty cool (well hot), you know what i mean! There are plenty of other home made videos of the likes of these on you tube, search for solar furnace. I remember an episode of mythbusters where they set fire to a boat from a distance by using a bunch of mirrors. I have taken apart a bunch of old harddisks i had collected from over the years to get the highly reflective platters to build a solar furnace some time....maybe one day will actually get round to building it. After installing Solar Panels on my house and seeing how hot they get, wanted to up the anti a bit :)

And that's only a small yellow main series star. Replace it with a blue super giant star and earth would be inside. We probably can't immagine the energy such a star can emmit. But all is well as it is. Our little sun is very stable and has a life span of many billions of years.

They revisited that episode with another with Obama as guest, but I never saw the follow up. I'd love to see this on a large scale take out a boat.

Haha, I love the Arduino, never looked for projects on CP for it though. Everything starts with a small model first. Scaling it up is the easy part, right?

I think this is one of the largest solar furnaces; http://www.solarnavigator.net/spanish_solar_generating_station.htm[^]

I want to see them weaponize that and shoot something down, just a kite or a drone,.. or hydrogen filled zeppelin.

The camera work was good. I couldn't spot the frikkin shark!

Although it didn't go up fully in flames it did char the surface and give off smoke, and as they say there is no smoke without fire..... There's a link for that; http://web.mit.edu/2.009/www/experiments/deathray/10_Mythbusters.html[^] :)
