My child has been accepted by two schools: (1) University of Maryland - College Park. (2) Brandeis University. Brandeis is supposed to be better than Maryland (according to US News ranking) but a lot more expensive. Assuming I have the money to pay for it, which school do you think I should pick? Thanks.

I used to live about 5 miles from U of M. Maryland is not a gun-friendly state.

Pick the most expensive but only fund at the cheaper rate. Leave your child to earn the difference.

I lived just next to Brandeis University for four years. It is considered to be an excellent school, but as you noticed very expensive (more than Harvard). From what I know, it is not well known as a technical school - it mostly produces lawyers :) If that's what your child wants and is good at, go for it.

No. It's his choice if he wants to pay the difference between the two or make his child do so, but it should be the child's call about where he/she goes.

UMCP is a great school for many degrees.  Not sure what the other one offers, but if it's limited to lawyering as has been suggested, start of at UMCP until your child is ready to decide upon a major.

If that was going to happen on anything resembling a regular basis, it would have already. Texas will be passing the campus-carry providsions for licensed CHL holders this year.

Here's my advice. This is based on my sampling of coworkers and friends who have gone from a range of Ivy League, MIT, Big Ten, and small state schools. Good schools only open doors if they are very well known. I went to a well known, but not exactly prestigious University in the city, because I had access to great internships in a great industry (trading software) I think I ended up doing as well or better than many of my friends who went to top 5 Engineering schools when it came to job hunting. Plus a very large percentage of people in this city have post grad degrees from my university, so they like to hire/favor undergrads from the university. Something to consider is the size, because it reflects the size/influence of the alumni network. Also what does your kid favor? Is he going to be paying off his student loans? If so, my advice to him is go cheap or get a scholarship.

What a Ride!" — Hunter S. Thompson

But he had to pass this extra validation/rule before throwing an error from other college. ;P So this is the advantage to U & M

My child has been accepted by two schools: (1) University of Maryland - College Park. (2) Brandeis University. Brandeis is supposed to be better than Maryland (according to US News ranking) but a lot more expensive. Assuming I have the money to pay for it, which school do you think I should pick? Thanks.

Maryland gave me a degree. Brandeis is the obvious choice.
