I recently bought a Bose Companion 5 speaker set. I know the standard reaction of most well informed geeks will be that of outright scorn and mockery. While I do believe that they are overpriced and certainly not the best, it was the most compact, good looking and great sounding package for that price range. And yes, the 5.1 emulation works very well. It even tries to simulate sounds that are supposed to be projected by the rear center speakers. It sounds like any other good quality system when you leave it on and walk around or if you are away from the speakers. But in front of them, they are simply outstanding. Mozart simply sounds heavenly. The other option was the Logitech Z series. I know that they are very good and are a lot cheaper, but that is a true 5.1 set and I don't have the space to install 4 satellites.

Watching the gadget show tonight. They did a bit on surround systems. Bose system costing 4500gbp was beaten by a Sony system costing 250. I'm just saying........ :)

Thanks. You just added a truckload to my already overburdening buyers remorse. I'm a little impulsive, but not crazy. I would never spend more than 500 for a sound system. I simply can't differentiate beyond a certain point.

The only thing more foolish than buying Bose audio is buying Monster cables to go with it.

Ummm, this is a desktop speaker system. Any particular reason why you think it's foolish buying a Bose apart from the standard reasons mentioned in my original post which most people dole out?

The fact that their stuff is routinely overpriced by an order of magnitude is sufficient.

I won a Bose system (A Lifestyle 20 or something) a few years ago. My budget would never stretch to buying Bose, but it's certainly awesome sound. Let's face it m you could have gone mad and bought B&O!!!!

You really deserve some mockery, but it's to early in the morning for me to bother.

Care to explain why? I've been putting the speakers through a lot of tests with real 5.1 encoded audio and it has performed pretty well. On second thoughts, unless you actually have heard one and think that the "simulation" does not work, don't bother.

For speakers I think B&W is big money better spent.
